Regarding the "toilet room/closet." My house has one, they are very common in new houses here, and also in the part of California I was from. It allows two people to use the bathroom at the same time, with some privacy. My little toilet room is very tiny, probably like the one in your unit.

Same here in all newer homes. I'm spoiled by this which we have in our master bathroom and miss it when we don't have a hotel room or timeshare with either a separate WC for the toilet (or a second bathroom). Married 28 years but still like our privacy.
