Social Security Numbers

So I THOUGHT that all three of my Shell memberships had been sold.

Unfortunately one of the buyer's is now refusing to provide his SSN for establishing the billing account upon transfer.

Obviously they are in the driver’s seat, and I have worked with the title company to assure the buyer this is legit. Any other suggestions I can offer the buyer to reassure them?

I hate having to provide my SS # as well. You can tell them that it has to be done with the SS # but that they can provide it to the company or resort directly leaving you out of it.

That was the original plan, I was only brought into it after the buyer told the title company to contact me. When I asked him, he stated that he wanted full disclosure before giving it out. I reiterated what they had said, and carbon copied them allowing them to respond but have yet to here anything.

This buyer was hesitant though from the beginning. Although they made quick payment, the feedback they left was basically that they were skeptical. I may call him myself, as having a live body may provide some ease of mind. Perhaps I may even direct him here to help him learn more about his new membership!

I've never really understood the issue with this.... It's not possible to keep a social security number absolutely private. Just think of how many times a person discloses a social security number during their lifetime. How many companies, banks, credit card companies, real estate offices, employers, etc have that information. Consider how many people work for the IRS alone! It wasn't long ago that many real estate deeds contained a social security number, recorded right into public records.

I can appreciate the desire to reduce the exposure, but for most people, it's far too little far too late to worry about keeping that information close to the vest now! The real concern should be to ensure you have proper credit monitoring in place, or better yet have instituted a credit freeze to protect yourself from identity theft.

I do not like giving out my SS # but if you think about it that is the only way resorts can threaten you into paying knowing that it can affect your Credit rating.

I backed out of a Shell deal for the same reason(s). If they only wanted my SS#, I would have been happy to give it directly to the club. My issue was that they also wanted copies of Driver's Licenses and filled out credit applications. I didn't want them running my credit whenever they felt like it to offer me any special deals. It was the credit app that broke the camel's back for me.

I have ignored every request by the resorts I own for my social security number. It has never prevented a purchase, but I don't own Shell.

For Social Security and Tax Purposes ~ Not for Identification

How many of you remember when they used to read like that? I bet a few of you HAVE cards that still say this

Is someone asked my dad for is ss number, he would have jumped down their throats and spread out. He would not give it out for any reason. He took my mom to a chiropractor
and while she was being seen the receptionist was asking him all kinds of personal information questions. He told her, she didn't need any of that, she said well in order to set up an account she did. His response was , " Did I ask you to set up an account? " " I will be paying cash, that is all you need to know. "
My SS card says Not for Identification, Guess that dates me, Greg

FYI the buyer did eventually decide to provide his SSN to Shell. I am no longer an SVC member!
