Precisely the point I was making (after 10 years and 50000 posts on Internet TS forums it is something I am quite aware of), and I made the decision not to mince words, so that the OP would understand exactly where they're at.

They seem to now, it not taking long to get them there.

Having read the intervening posts since my rude awakening post, the OP's plight is a common one.

I have empathy. The industry does not. Sorta in my Dad's advice . . . that and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee.

      Here is a thought.

Some resorts are heavily owned-used. Some are less owner-used, but some owners still use their weeks and never trade.

For those owners who use their ownerships instead of trading or renting, some may wish to have another week. The way this week is described I am guessing it to be floating, which would mean an owner could use it to extend their stay or to have another unit, for more people, the week they use it.

At a fixed week resort, it would be fairly easy to ask the owners who own in that timeframe if they would like another week. (I can think of some resorts in some timeframes when the answer would be yeah fur shur). I don't know about floating weeks resorts since you would have to contact all the owners, but that is one possibility.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I'm accustomed to the 'floating week' rule so it had never occurred to me that a timeshare would work any other way (e.g. fixed-week).

The original way, fixed, is the simplest. Everyone knows what they own and in smaller resorts owners know other owners of the same weeks.

&, there is no annual rush to grab the good stuff, with the slow folks losing out.

We finally decided that we've wasted enough money on it, and also long ago gave-up on trying to sell it. Instead, we'd like to just give it back. We called the resort and they told us that we still owed the 2009 assessment AND that VRI was going to charge us several hundred for a "deedback".

                Is this fair?

We used to have a 2nd timeshare (at a different resort) and we were able to give it back through a simple/cheap quitclaim deed. Now, it sounds like VRI thinks it can force us to pay for something we don't want? I just totally feel ripped-off here, but am I wrong?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't pay your fees they will eventually foreclose and ruin your credit. Find a local charity and see if you can donate the week/deed. I've seen timeshare units on the annual WGBH (PBS channel 2) Boston Auction in the past. Maybe there is a charity in your area that could make some money. Be creative! Good Luck

Oh, if we're going that route, try these folks. They took the last one I referred, and I even got a thank you.

                  Tell em I sent ya.
