  • Fabulous Week in New York City

We just got back last night from NYC. We stayed a week at the HGVC West 57th Street timeshare. This was our second visit to NYC. We stayed there for 12 nights in July 2008.

This past week was awesome despite the rain for the first 4 days. We love New York and will be going back next year. The HGVC timeshare was very good. We liked it much better than the Manhattan Club where we stayed before. The unit itself was just an average sized hotel room but the bed and chair are very comfortable. What made the HGVC so good is the absolute excellent service from everybody. Right across the street is the Green Café 57 which is great for breakfast at a very reasonable price.

We went to 2 shows, Jersey Boys and Westside Story, Both were excellent. We went to mass at the St. Patrick's Cathedral which was awesome. We also walked around part of Central Park. We did the "Top of the Rock" tour and also the NBC Studios tour. The "Top of the Rock" is great with a fabulous 360 degree view of the city and surrounding area. We did some shopping along 5th avenue, Times Square at night, and generally walked all over. The New Yorkers were very helpful and friendly as always. All in all we had a great time and can't wait to go back.

We do not like rain. I lived in the Pacific Northwest and saw enough rain to last a lifetime. The last time we went to NYC, it was sunny all 12 days except for a downpour one night.

Glad you had a good trip despite the rain, and that HGVC worked out so well.

Nice review, John. I'll be going back to New York next year. I'll try to get into either the MC or HGVC. Either one is fine. I can't wait.

Did you trade in or use HGVC points?

Yes, we need the rain or we will get the wild fires again later this summer but it isn't fun when it's raining during your vacation.

John, is it very warm and humid in NYC this time of the year? I have been there in May, June and October and every time the humidity wasn't bad and the temperature was very nice. I love the balmy evenings that you can walk outside without a coat. Don't try this near the coast in southern California. Very seldom do we have a balmy evening here.

I am glad that you enjoyed NYC again and want to go back. We miss the atmosphere of a big city and the walking around. It may be in downtown LA and Hollywood but I don't know anyone who likes to go there unless you go to the Music Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall or the Kodak Theatre. You may see people walking on Hollywood Boulevard near the Grauman's Chinese Theatre but I don't know where else. We would rather go to downtown Long Beach.

                  Emmy,

First, you can't begin to compare any other city with New York. There are people walking, eating outside, etc. all over for several blocks in all directions. It is a very dynamic atmosphere. We love just walking around and going to Times Square.

The sunny days we had this trip were gorgeous. Unfortunately it did rain the first 4 days. The weather was great when we were there in July 2008 for 12 days. It is more humid than here but not as bad as Florida. We found it quite comfortable.

One of the things we really enjoy about New York are the people. I have a little trouble getting around and I have never had people help me like the New Yorkers did. They also have a great sense of humor.

I agree that Long Beach is a lot nicer than the other areas in Metro Los Angeles.

                    JWC,

Glad you had a great time. Have you ever been to any of the other boroughs in NYC?

Of course the main attraction to NYC is Manhattan. Yes you are correct there is a definite sense of energy in "The City" as we affectionately call Manhattan.

However the outer boroughs are like visiting all different nations of the world. A cornucopia of nations.

                    It is endless.

In Queens there is yet another Chinatown that rivals the original Chinatown in "The City". Korea is all along Northern Blvd from Flushing to the Border of Nassau County. Along the 7 train you can travel from Greece to South America. In Brooklyn you can go back to Russia. Also in Queens there are Russian, Polish enclaves.

In all of these small enclaves you will find small mom and pop eateries that are just hidden gems of restaurants!

                    Come back an visit again.

Here is one of my favorite local websites that Chronicles all of NYC Past and Present!

That is a great web site and I put it my favorites New York folder.

We did tours of Brooklyn, Harlem, and Queens in 2008. We also went to the Bronx when we went to the Yankees game. Unfortunately I have mobility issues that limit where I can go. I rented a 3 wheel motor scooter for going around Manhattan and that worked out great.

And that is why I am so proud to call it home.

We really needed the rain - for me it has been the ideal summer - almost no rain and quite warm - but you caught the city in the only real rain we had all season. Made up for last summer during which it rained almost every weekend.

Summer I try to get away as much as possible but maybe I will catch you next time. Today was almost too hot in Nantucket!
