I have always wanted to see all 50 states but I end up going back to places I've been to because I loved it so much. Ex: Fla & AZ I'm even thinking of going in alphabetical order just to make sure I see them all If I did that I would end up doing Arkansas, Alabama & Colorado . What about you? How many have you done? So many places, so little time (and money) shaggy

We've been to all 50 (Alaska twice ), and Puerto Rico. Four years ago we traveled 10,000 miles in 6 weeks ... across the Southern states, up California, WA & OR, then across the top to MN, down through WI to IL (home state) then south again home, going through 19 different states before reaching FL the second time. What an amazing and diversified country we live in.

What are the guidelines? I would suggest that if you physically set foot in a state that counts, ie. change planes in an airport that you walk in the airport would count. If you fly over a state that does not count. If you take a river cruise, but do not step foot on land in a state, it does not count. Does this sound right?

23 and 3 posessions
Not counting airports I have 23 states and 3 posessions.
Missing the whole middle of the country.....there aren't any beaches!
There are a few more I'm sure we will eventually get to for National Parks and cities but I doubt we'll get to all of them.Lawren

47.....
states, and all legit.
We took three cross country/cross Canada trips by car many years ago, which of course added the bulk of the states. Also traveled on business and that added a few which I missed.
Only have Alaska, Mississippi and Alabama that I have not set foot in, but haven't added a new state since 1984 Lousiana, 1985 Hawaii.
BTW, in my "rules" an airport stop doesn't count, but of course that is just MHO. (my kids try to claim Colorado and California just from a 30 minute layover in the airports of Denver and S.F. to /from Hawaii. I say no.)
To me, it doesn't have to be a sleepover to count, but you do physically have to walk somewhere within the state.

OK...I had to pull up a list of the states in order to make sure I didn't miss any.
I've been to 25 states, so far....do I get credit if I have been to some of them many times?? That happens u know.....Angela
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

46 US states and two US territories plus 3 Canadian provinces.
As to foreign countries, there is an organization called the Travellers Century Club and to be a member you have to have been to 100 countries. Physical presence is all that is required, and an airline fuel stop counts. By their list, I am up to 76 countries, but they allow multiple counts for parts of certain countries. For example, I can count Greece but the Greek islands of Rhodes and Corfu count seperately, so that makes three countries from my travels in Greece. When I go to Crete, it will be four. Similarly, both Asian and European Turkey count, so I get two from my travels to Turkey. For the US, Hawaii and Alaska count seperately. Oddly, in the Caribbean, all the French West Indies are bunched together and coun only once as are all of the Dutch West Indies. My list includes two airline fuel stops, an Air France Caribbean service fuel stop in Haiti, and a South African Airways fuel stop in the Cape Verde Islands. Non-recognized countries often count, and my list includes two of those, the breakaway statelet of Trans-Dnisteria, legally part of Moldova, and the former ''independent homeland'' of Boputswana, now reincorporated back into South Africa. Trips I am planning in the next couple of years will push my total up over 85.

Must be a cultural thing.
Still an interesting topic. There are States I would avoid.
For Shaggy's comment of get out of the car and actually do something , there is a spot where in Australia the borders of three States meet, getting out and doing something takes on meaning when you can do it in three States.Mark B.
