  • Back from Myrtle Beach!! 7/3- 7/10

I was so looking forward to this trip. I needed to relax and I did after the first couple of days. More on that later. This part is the bad. It gets better after this.

Stayed at the Maritime Beach Club in No Myrtle Beach. Had a 2 br #298 that overlooked the Tiki Bar, altho I could see the ocean. As I arrived I heard a customer complaining about the sewer smell in his room and that it was so bad that his daughte had a asthma attack!! Defender resorts would not help at all , so I suggested he call RCI and demand another week for compensation. I will have to do the same as I found out I got the same room!! I had no problem until I left when the smell got reallty bad. The girls told me it happened every morning but went away and was gone by the time we got up. Kristi called about the odor and was told , "oh, it's the sewer smell!!" Upon checking out I told them I was contacting the City of MB to check this out. I was sorry to do this as everyone had been so nice during the stay. Also on the last day, the ceiling started leaking from the condo above into the bathroom where Brittany was sitting and she and the floor got wet. They of course understood and enjoyed me and my personality all week and invited me back.

Sunday: Call from home--crisis with Monkey

I had come a day earlier and Kristie & family was bringing Kelli after she got off work. I got a frantic call saying Monkey had had a heat stroke and was suffocating. They put her in a cool bath but that didn't help so rushed her to the emergency vet where they needed $75 to even start working on her!!!! Kristie yelled and said are you going to let her die over $75. I gave the ok with my card # and the Dr called me with the news she may not be able to save her and wanted to run tests that would be over $600 !! I gave her my ok. I then sat down and just bawled.
I had never felt so helpless in a long long time. My phone died and the people at the desk charged up my phone and the maintenance man loaned me his cell phone to call the vet. Next day I called Kelli & she said Kenny & Kristie were on the way to get her and bring her home!!!! Yay!!!!!! They gave them a hard time because they needed my credit card # to release her. They had been there about 1 & 1/2 hrs and were really beside themselves b4 they reached me. I had just walked into the room when the phone started ringing. Kenny took great care of Monkey so I didn't have to worry and so I could start enjoying myself. The bad news is now over. I can start with the fun stuff now!!

You must have been so upset and helpless not to be able to make the decisions yourself immediately when Monkey needed emergency care but what a relief that the dog is OK now.

You have some very caring friends and you were staying at a resort where people really cared for you too.

This is the same resort where Mom & I stayed before she got so ill. She fell and broke her ribs and passed out. One of EMS people was the manager of the hotel and he came and checked her out every day. This is a older resort and has some problems but the people who work there are wonderful!!!

              Rest of the tale

After a horrible start I can report the rest was great. We didn't do a whole lot as Donald had just lost his job and I just wanted to lay at the pool/beach and work on my tan. I did take Brittany to see ONE at the Alabama Theater and she seemed to really like it, esp the comedian and the dancing.
We also took a dolphin watch tour out of Little River with the Hurricane Fleet. It was reasonable, $20 per person and included a nature talk. They have a shrimp boat so we watched them dump the nets and bring them up and threw some bags of things they caught: stingrays, crabs, baby shark, etc. The kids really liked it and Kristi was happy as she always wanted to be a marine biologist. Kelli & Brittany went to Wonderworks but it was so crowded that most lines were over an hour wait. They said it was great but would not go when it was raining as everyone else did the same thing.

We ate breakfast & lunch in and went out for dinner. My fav thing I ate was a sautaed (sp) crab cake sandwich at Duffy's Seafood Shack on Main street of NMB. We had pizza at Georgios (also on main st) It was so good the kids ate it 3 times , I had spaghetti once and it was also good. These two places I highly recommend. We ate at Ella's of Calabash and everything was great except for the flounder (tasted fishy) Upon recommendation of the older man at the desk we ate at Ocean Garden which he told me was a seafood buffett that also had excelent prime rib. It turned out to be a Chinese buffet with a few items of seafood . It was tasty but not what we were expecting but I wouldn't recommend it unless you wanted a chinese buffet.

We had a 2br overlooking the tiki bar which was the worse room we could have had. I could see the ocean over the hut but it stayed open late and we couldn't sit on the balcony and enjoy the beach due to the noise.

It was very beachy decorated in blues and yellow , just like the RCI pic and very soundproof. Never heard any neighbors but then we were on the corner unit. The unit itself was small , but not as small as I was expecting as others had reported. Flat screen tv in living room/master bedroom. No w/d in unit but did have them available if you needed them. Kitchen was ok for making breakfast & sandwiches for lunch but not many pots & pans . There was a bar that had 2 stools and a dining room table that sat 6.
The main bedroom had a small shower which had a built in seat which was great for me but no bathtub. There was a bathtub in the other room. There was a small exercise room with 2 treadmills and one eliptical . Also had a steam room. Kristi said she loved the tradmill, a Nautilus.

Even tho the building is older and needs some maintenace I'd stay there again as long as I wasn't on the 2nd or 3rd floor overlooking the Tiki hut.
The location & the people who work there made it enjoyable.

So it goes, I didn't fall or injure myself and other than my darling Monkey scaring me half to death it was a wonderful trip.
