    Wed: Home & Final Thoughts

Kenny finally showed up to help drive home and we stopped at a beautiful waterfall. I walked to the first overlook and quit. Kenny made it to the 2nd & came back & Kelli made it all the way. She said it was well worth it & she took many pics. It started with a B & when I find it I'll edit this an add it . I highly recommend seeing it if you are driving I-40. I have to admit I cried when I realized I couldn't go past the first overlook. I love waterfalls but my leg won't let me do what I used to. I guess I should just be grateful for what I CAN do.
Cheri told me she was amazed at how I got around, a little slow but like the tortise I kept on going.

Drive home was uneventful except that Kenny got a speeding ticket after I warned him to slow down.

Final thoughts: One of the best vacations I've had in a long time. I loved everything except the food at Gen Jackson. The resort was fabulous, if you can't be happy there, I give up. Everyone was friendly, helpfull & curteous.
The rooms & amenities were all good/great. Location was excellent.

Food: Loveless Cafe was my fav. Their mac & cheese, hashbrown casserole, fried chicken & meat loaf were just excellent. I bought the cookbook just for the hasbrown casserole!! Also enjoyed Monell's & Johnny A's which is just behind the resort. You can actually get a cheesburger cooked medium or med rare & the chicken nachos were OMG. Also ate at the Backstage Opry Grill which was just ok but edible. We also ate at a lttle restaurant called the Country Cafe which I don't know where it was as we were going somewhere else called Lucy's Country Cafe but they sent us here by mistake . It was great & they had a dessert called Damn that's good chocolate cake. It was aptly named , OMG . They guard the receipe and won't give it out, but it was the most moist cake I've ever eaten. Puckett's Grocery & restaurant downtown which was pretty good, still not as good as Loveless. I liked their potato salad & turnip greens. Didn't like the green beans, tasted like came out of a can but better than Backstage Cafe where the greenbeans were like mush.

Tourist: Everything was great except the food on Gen Jackson. Don't miss Country Music HOF , the Opry, the Ryman, take a tour of the city & stars homes, listen to the music up & down Broadway.

Hope you enjoyed my trip and thanks for letting me relive it. Shaggy

I always enjoy your reports, Shaggy, and I meant to comment on this back when I first read it and say so. I am bad. But I did finally get around to looking for this:

Burgess Falls? I cannot believe how close they are to I-40! We went past them a zillion times driving out to visit my folks. My kids would have loved stopping there when they were little! Kinda kicking myself now for not knowing about them.

She had had her long straight hair cut & lightened and looked like a different person!! Just as sweet & thoughtful as always and of course we just took up where we let up and seemed like it was yesterday instead of 5 yrs ago.

We drove out to the middle of knowwhere to have lunch at the Loveless Cafe. The food was better than I remembered. Cheri had chicken salad, Kelli had meatloaf & I had fried chicken. All were just delicious and the sides were fabuloso!! Afterwards we were going to tour the former mansion of Barbara Mandrell's but we arrived to late and missed the last tour so instead we went to the cemetary to see where a lot of famous country stars were buried such as Hank Snow, Floyd Cramer, Bill Monroe & Keith Whitley. We had a dickens of a time finding Keith Whitley so Cheri & I split up. I saw a lot of really interesting tombstones with guitars, harleys, all shapes, but no Keith. I had wondered way away and here comes Cheri with the car saying she found it!! ( 10 ft away from where we originally parked) lol Someone had left a Elvis Presley guitar pick on his grave, who knows it could have been Elvis himself Very interesting.

After dropping us off we got some Mexican food and called it a night.

Catching up on some of your other trip reports, Shaggy. I am in Nashville from time to time and almost ventured to the Loveless Cafe on the last trip. It looked a bit far away from our airport area hotel, so I didn't make the trek. Maybe next time.

I was a big fan of Keith Whitley even before he went country and got famous. I think the last time I saw him in person was at the Down Home in Johnson City. Must have been the mid-70s. The death of someone so talented at such a young age was too tragic for words.

I've been to Dolly World countless times and have never seen a 25 lb pie. Two of my kids worked there. DD for years and middle DS one Christmas only as the young shepherd in a show. His voice changed by the next season and he never got to go back. DH and youngest DS did a one day guest appearance during this year's bluegrass festival there. I was doing the math earlier today to decide if I want to renew our season passes for next year. We don't go too often, but they make them so cheap that we always wind up getting them.

                    Lisa

That's about right. Was just looking at the pricing this morning. A day pass is $56 and a season pass is $86. Tax is added on top of those prices. If you want the gold pass with free parking and bigger food discounts (we always get just one) it's $122. The best deal is to go buy a season pass during the Christmas season. You can go for the rest of this year and to the end of next year on the one season pass.
