  • What do you collect?/Fav soo vin ears?

When I first started collecting I would buy xmas ornaments and magnets. Kelli would collect key chains and tshirts. I quit xmas ornaments as I haven't put up a tree in years. I love looking at my frige and remembering all my trips. I want to start a silver charm bracelet but everytime I try to start it I can't find what I want. I call the previous my cheapies but I also try to bring back one special thing that represents the area, such as jewelry, or clothing.

My very fav was bought 20 yrs ago on my first ts exchange. I went to St George Utah and stopped by the welcome center. The gentleman there asked me if I liked Indian jewelry. (Not really) Well he was a collector and sent me to the man who makes the jewelry for the No Rim of the GC, Bryce & Zion. Went to see him and it was love at first sight!! I tried on a bracelet that had a price tag of over $500 and hastly put it back. Well, he sold it to me for $125.My mother was furious at me for spending that kind of money (20 yrs ago that was a lot) I get more compliments on that piece and when I was at a craft show a lady stopped me (she sold Indian jewelry) and told me it was worth $700 -$800 and don't lay it around!! I didn't buy it to make money on it but bought it because I loved it. I also have a handmade/handpainted dress I bought while I was in Smuggs at a craft show , earrings from Sedona, etc. It all brings a smile to my face as I remember my travels. shaggy

When we travel my wife always buys a Christmas Ornament. I like refrigerator magnets which she hates. We used to buy a book on the area but we found that no body in our house reads them. If we take a lot of pictures I try to find a picture album with the area inscribed on the front.

We also try to pick up one, just one, ornament from each favorite place. Sometimes we don't. But since t/s almost never have coffee mugs that are real mugs, we always buy mugs on our first day, use them for the week and then bring them home...

If I like the music of the area, I buy CDs. It's easy to pack. I love music from Hawaii so have quite a collection. I love Latin American music too but haven't been yet to any of the countries so have only a few CDs but I have a few of other countries too where we have been.

Welsh Choirs are beautiful too so we have quite a collection of that too. The Welsh know how to sing and my DH is Welsh so he agrees.

I started with mugs, but have over 100 displayed in my kitchen. Then I went to magnets, which are on my fridge. I buy magnets to give to people too, since they are usually cheaper. Occasionally T shirts, and lately, IF I see a particularly pretty painting/picture of the area, I'll buy one.

I like to bring back cook books of the local cuisine. I also buy a piece of art or sculpture that represents the area. Usually, I wind up buying some type of clothing or accessories.

My husband always buys the two of us golf towels for our clubs, and golf hats, shirts, etc.....

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I try and find tiny pewter objects representing the area-like the Leaning Tower of Pisa when we were in Italy, an alligator from Florida and a cable car from San Fran. I think I have about a dozen of these tiny remembrences (that I have to dust from time to time). But they do bring back memories. Sometimes it's hard to find the perfect one, which only adds to my excitement when I find just what I'm looking for.

Antiques, mostly. While in London you can find me at Bermondsey (pronounced "Bermsey") and Petticoat Lane. Oh, auctions here and abroad if convenient.

I collect S.E.G. Pottery (Saturday Evening Girls/Paul Revere Pottery), real Dedham Pottery (Blue-white Bunny & other), Antique Samplers, Quilts (old),
Roseville, L.C. Tiffany (if a "deal").

Oh, did I mention timeshares ?

                  I collect timeshare weeks.

I love Princess House crystal and went to lots of those home parties in the 1980's, when the kids were small. I would drool over the beautiful things that I could not afford and would buy one small thing to help the hostess. Then recently I found all of those pieces on ebay for great prices. Now I have too many and haven't got the room.

I also inherited a service for twelve china set when my grandmother died, Sango Caprice. I have found lots of pieces on ebay to add to the set, so now I can serve about 32 people on fine china. Rick thinks I am a lunatic. I have four covered casserole dishes and 8 meat platters, and lots of different shapes of vegetable bowls. It is an obsession, but I don't have any more room, so I have to stop or buy more storage space.

I collect boxes. Some are very small ( 1 -2" ) up to jewelry box size and always try to find something that is representative of the area. My favorite my huband brought me from Russia - it is 2-3" high & 2.5" in diameter. It is intricately painted with a Russian lady drinking tea and is Laquered.

When we were at the Bay CLub on the Big Island they had a carved wood turtle box in the room that I just loved and had to really resist taking it home with me. If they had had them in the gift shop, I would have bought one - had to settle for one made from a green stone material.

The nice thing is, it makes it easy for my DH or kids when they travel - they can find a box wherever they go so it makes souvenier shopping easy and I have boxes from all over the world. The only problem is, sometimes I'll take a ring or earrings off and put them in the closest box and then can't always remember what I did with the item and so a scavenger hunt ensues.

                        Many, man

Lots of small things that catch my eye ~~ magnets, tiny bells, thimbles (but they have to be unusual ~ the more so the better!) I always, (or try to ... ), date them in an inconspicuous spot ~~ I know one day I'll forget just when I bought it. I rotate them on my fridge, and DH bought me a Curio two Christmases ago to help aliviate the clutter, and all my bells, thimbles, and plates ~~ and even a little German Doll from our stay there many, many moons ago, are happily housed there.

Getting shots of neeto stuff… Like structures from a vantage point not normally seen from, or sails in a sunset, ships and aircraft, seascapes, plant life. Most are 35mm slides and videos so I can’t show you. I too, look for photos in different lighting or viewpoint.

Collecting napkin, menu, matchbook, business card and post card of places visited… especially eating-places. Notice, I didn’t simply say restaurants.

I try to always find coffee mugs of the places we stay, my son collects lighters even though he doesnt smoke, and I always try to find travel brochures and maps of each place we go, especially maps of hiking and biking trails and area information. I have a file cabinet that it all gets kept in, it makes a great reminder of where we have been and what we did there.
