About 8 months ago, I made a number of exchanges through RCI. One was for my husband and I, and another was a Guest Exchange for our son. I promptly received all confirmations, including Guest Certificate and neatly filed it away. After all, I would never give a 23 year old young man paperwork 8 months in advance of his trip.
Over the next 8 months we were in the height of planning a huge wedding for our daughter. During this hectic time, we kepth saying right after the wedding, my daughter and her husband would be on their honeymoon, my husband and I in Mexico, and when we return, our son on the beach. The day before we left for Mexico, I gave our son the paperwork for his exchange, cautioning DO NOT LOSE OR FORGET it.
Problem: After driving 9 hours, our son arrived at his resort only to be told he was a week early! None of us verified the dates on the confirmation that were made 8 months previous. The resort said, “I’m sorry, we can’t help you”. He proceeded to call RCI, and they telephoned the resort and made arrangements for him to check in immediately. Fortunately, there was space and RCI made the exchange without penalty. He and his friends had all taken vacation for that week and not being allowed to stay would have been a disaster.
Lesson 1 learned: Let go, give up the documents and allow children to be the responsible adults they have become.
Lesson 2 learned: Check confirmation thoroughly. The mistake was not RCI’s, but mine.
Today, I am very grateful to RCI.
