  • Dreams Puerto Vallarta Nighmare Trip Part 1 of 2 or 3

July 20-27, 2013 Dreams Puerto Vallarta

We arrived at Dreams PV with high anticipation after hearing so much about it, and waiting so long to check it out. There is a Mexican charm as you pull in with the cobblestone road. We were greeted at lobby entrance by the concierge and bell boys. Cold cloths to freshen up and a glass of champagne. Car unloaded, valet parking. and then off to check in to preferred tower.. some distance away but much less hectic then the regular tower check in desk, so that was good. There was only one girl to check you in so thus we did have a wait, but there are nice couches and seats available. After 30-45 minutes they were ready to check us in. We had done an RCI exchange so just had the AI to pay, that went smooth with a charge card. We were assigned room 1555, bellboys brought our luggage to room, gave descriptions of how AC worked, mini bar, snacks, etc. and off they went. No other direction were given, other then where the ice cube machine was, which I asked as whatever I drink I like cold, except coffee. There is an ice machine on every other floor at least but many were not functioning, so it frequently was an adventure to get ice. ( They send you numerous emails prior to arrival asking you to pay AI in advance for a 5% discount and resort coupons, more on those later. I told them we would pay upon arrival, not worth 5% to tie up our money.. they continued with incessant emails, even past the 30 days in advance for discount, I even told them well it is past the 30 days we arrive in a week so no discount, nope, but still get resort coupons. We paid upon arrival). Since we were there thru an exchange with RCI, our AI fees were $106.50 p/p/d. ( After our stay we felt this is surely way overpriced for this resort.) We did meet Bethy, the concierge. Very sweet and helpful, young lady.

The grounds are nice but older, not as manicured as many resorts we visit but fine. The property tends to sprawl horizontally. The elevators worked fine, and there is a special snack , drink area on first floor of preferred tower for those staying there. Breakfast items in morning, sandwiches in afternoon and drinks with or without alcohol. We rarely used this area unless it was to grab a soda on our way to wherever. We were asked if we wished to receive discount coupons for massages or what have you for sitting in on , not a timeshare presentation but vacation club. One and all the same as far as we are concerned and no interest as we did this at Sunscape in Ixtapa ( also a resort owned by this company) and the coupons are only percentage off ,nothing free. They can be used for spa, romantic dinner, way over priced since you are already on and paying for AI, bottle of wine, and again just amounts off like $10 USD, $40, $20, etc and you cannot combine them all to get anything free, always a charge. Our opinion, useless, we did not use, even one. Pretty much a farce. So they did not bother us again during our stay after a firm no thanks not interested. We did have free internet being in the preferred tower but ha, I used my hot spot as very slow internet provided.

Our room 1555, A Preferrred Tower Junior Suite. Enter from backside and goes straight thur to balcony. On left was a bathroom, with a trough for sink, unique, but the faucets, one on each end were very loose and really not very effective in spreading water in this style sink. The bathroom was a good size, seperate area for toilet, area for shower, and then a corner tub. Plenty of towels, hot water, and amenities were labeled by Gilcrist & Sommes for Dreams. They gave you shampoo, soap, shower gel, shaving cream, small toothpaste, one toothbrush, comb, body lotion and sunscreen #15 ( the sunscreen is a nice and different touch but we use a much higher number, but this was different). Beyond the bathroom to right was an armoire for clothes, the minibar with corona, coke, sprite, diet coke, 4 juices and 3 waters. Replenished daily though we had to call quite a few times for refilling. They also gave you nips of Chivas Regal, vodka and rum, pringles and M&M's, but again those were not replaced unless asked for. In this armoire was also a safe, and coffee maker which has a pull out shelf to fill, what a hassle, as the cord kept getting caught, so that was an issue and upon first fill, we had to pull the whole armoire out as cord was caught behind, something that should be checked before folks check in. They also supply coffee packets. There was an ironing board and iron in this armoire as well. Small amount of hanging space but there were draws in bathroom.

On opposite side was the king size bed, canopy like with fringe or tassle material half way down, different. The bed sits very high, so if short could be an issue, I am about 5 ft 4 inches and had to kind of hop up. Was a little dangerous getting off bed for me d/t the highness, and have bone and hip issue, but I managed. The bed was comfortable. Just beyond the bed was a L shaped sofa and coffee table and one upholstered chair and a flat screen Tv with DVD player. Opposite that, a table and two chairs, high back equipales, which did not fit the decor at all, along with being awkward and uncomfortable. We had to have someone come to help with the TV and even they had hard time and also the DVD player they let you borrow movies with an open charge card for free, one at a time, you pick them out at front desk, sign for and return so not charged. Sliding glass doors led to a balcony longer than wide with two plastic chairs and a tiny side table but a great ocean view.
The room was nice, but small and wonder, if this was the upgraded room, what the other rooms were like. Plugs were at a premium. The room was like a very small studio without a kitchen or oversized hotel room with sitting area. The decor was a mix of old and new per say.. nothing spectacular or unique. Served its purpose but I do prefer much more space and I had traded quite a large unit thru RCI for this so was just fair in comparison. The room was clean, but the bathroom did have some areas needing repairs, the faucets which I mentioned and also between shower and toilet area leaked. Other than that we were fine, and settled in to our week stay.

We unpacked and then went to the Seaside Grill for lunch, the service was very slow, but the staff were pleasant. I had a philly sandwich and hubby had a shrimp and crab sandwich. This restaurant overlooks the ocean, but is small for size of resort. The food was just so so, no raves...but it was just lunch and we were hungry so we were happy. We then walked the grounds..

The grounds are sprawling, landscape is nice. The adult pool is very , very small, approx. 17 loungers only and impossible to get one unless you get up at crack of dawn I guess. There are no towel cards so folks just put their towels down and reserve loungers and there is no culpability for towels thus no big deal if someone takes it. We were never able to sit in this area. To give an example of size, this pool is so small most folks who have built in pools at their homes would have bigger pools. The other pools are not huge either, one has a swim up bar, packed with kids etc. For the amount of guests the two towers of this property can accommodate, the pools are very small. Again at my own home my pool is larger. Loungers by the other pools, lined up in rows right next to each other, not very appealing, again an issue with getting a lounger. Apparently there is a 30 min. rule for saving chairs but not enforced in anyway. We were able to sit in this area one day by getting a concierge to get us a chair. So squecky wheel gets a seat I guess. So the pools were not an impressive factor for us.

The beach is like in a cove, so you cannot walk very far but it is more secluded this way. From our room on 5th floor it looks very flat, with nice smooth sand and lots of palapas and chairs. When you actually get on beach, again an issue with getting a seat especially in area near Preferred Tower which is not exclusive to Preferred guests despite the fact you paid to be on that side and there is an apparent difference. The palapas are nice and provide shade, the loungers are again lined up like a movie theater, you could move them but no shade whatsoever. Not ideal. The sand is groomed as is apparent which is nice so not rocky etc., but it has a significant slope to it at one point which is not evident when looking from room or in photos of resort. The beach area is much more groomed , nicer etc. on preferred side but as I stated you can go on whatever side. There is service pool side or on the beach for drinks.. service is good and friendly. They have lots of activities and the activity staff esp. Christian, are very nice, as are most of staff.
Overall the beach was nice, but not being real beach people per say, we prefer to do long walks on beach, it was not ideal for us but it was different than many in PV. The pools were very disappointing and we are pool people.

The gym looked quite nice as did the spa though we did not utilize due to extenuating circumstances, more to follow on that.

A few things to note there is nightime activity on site, with some nights there being a live band in one of lounges. Sadly, there is an upcharge for premium alcohol even Don Julio Tequila Reposado tequila, which was very, very disappointing to me. For the cost of the AI and quality I surely feel premium alcohol should have been included. They were accomodating and did provide me with a bottle in my room, but still not the same, though I do appreciate their graciousness. I have to say they truly went out of their way to please and satisfy. We enjoyed the lounges at night and they have a large variety of martini's so I went with those. I tried different kinds, each night we could. I am a light drinker so 1-2 drinks is it., but one night I could not get another martini until they got my glass as they ran out of martini glasses, really?? Seems a small issue but it is big if you want good ratings and consider yourself a top notch resort. They also had in the lounges for sale, some natural herb/tobacco type stuff and Hookahs ( waterpipe) , not for sale but use. They were everywhere. I am not a prude by any means but I was really glad I had not brought my parents on this trip, I would think that would be a real turn off for many, I know even for us it certainly brought the whole atmosphere of the lounge to a different level. When asking about these, we were told it is all natural, not "pot", and has no harmful effects. Being who I am, we were offered to try by another guest , a young fellow, hubby said no, and I was going to try it but decided to google it first, ha, thankfully I did not try, as it has nicotine in it and I am a former smoker so that would not have been good. Another issue, if you had an aversion to smoke then this is not the place for you as smoke does emulate from these and also the users. This is the first resort I have been to in Mexico that has had these and truly we found it totally detracted from the atmosphere. They are pretty unique looking , colorful water pipes though. LOL.

El Patio Restaurant, Mexican, had a nice atmosphere, Mexican touches, and they gave us a great seat by ourselves in a gazebo. It has a black painted cupola ceiling so actually gives the appearance of being open and the night sky, quite different. Our waiter Fernando was very good. We ate Mexican of course but sadly the food was dry, and certainly would not warrant a return visit from us. It was also very, very noisy as is most of the resort, whether inside or out.

Room service was okay , no raves,we did that for breakfast and also some other meals reason to be told soon. The World Club Buffet Restaurant had a large variety of items, was clean, service was very good, and food was decent, though any meat throughout resort was tough. Frankly though, of all the restaurants, the buffet, World Club had the best so that says a lot.
On Sunday night which was actually our anniversary, but we were waiting to celebrate next week at our usual place, Casa Velas. We did make reservations at Portofino though, as that is their more dressy restaurant. They knew we were having anniversary as hubby told them and also they followed my activity on Trip Advisor. Well I must say they did go above and beyond for this occasion. They gave us a private party room, with a huge table, balloons, confetti, red plates on mirrored place mats, very romantic. We were offered the pick from regular menu or chef made a specialty for us. We went for the chef's specialty. Ramon our waiter was wonderful. The presentation of the food was great, the atmosphere was incredible, sadly, and not to sound unappreciative, the food fell short. It started with Portabello mushrooms which was good, then tomato, basil and mozzarella cheese, flavorless. The main course was filet and lobster tail. The filet was tough, to point of inability to cut or chew mostly, and the lobster tail totally tasteless. So our disappointment of the meal and food quality overshadowed our excitement and enjoyment of the beautiful arrangements made for us. The dessert though was excellent. It was a chocolate pudding cake with ice cream and raspberries. We went to Rendezvous lounge afterwards for a short time and the waitresses were great, especially Lilia.
Upon return to our room there was a banner across our door, saying Anniversary , nice touch ( they do it for honeymooners etc). They left that on until our departure.

They deliver a daily paper under your door every night or early morning, we frequently had to chase one down as did not get it, this also happened at another of their resorts Sunscape in Ixtapa. It lists all the activities of the day and night and what restaurants are open and closed. I find this totally irritating...if you advertise say 7 restaurants, then 7 restaurants should be open daily but no only say 3 open per day. Okay we dealt with it, fine. They did print the following day any one having anniversary, honeymooners , birthdays etc, in the newspaper, so a nice momento.
The day maid, despite good tipping was very disorganized and I was not pleased. We ran out of TP more than once. Tissues the same etc. The Night turn down maid, which we usually do not do, but we did a few nights she was very good, stocking us and putting petals about bed and room to try to make it romantic.

We had dinner Monday night at Oceana Grill, rustic seaside atmosphere. Great service, many had very long waits with beepers the waits can be so long, but we made reservations, so as to avoid standing in line etc. No fun my opinion. We heard people complaining of over an hour wait etc. Gilberto was our waiter, he was great. Again the food was fair at best. We each had something different, hubby having a shrimp dish. Presentation was good, but I would rather have good food over presentation and if a restaurant can do both well then it is great. They did have one of the Chef's, Eliud, make our desserts tableside, he decorated the plates in front of us and flamed the creme brulee, no clue how they make this but not like any creme brulee we have ever had, like pudding, again disappointment.

Monday night late, is where it all goes downhill from just fair overall to not good at all. Hubby up sick all night with diarrhea and vomiting. All day Tuesday we spent in room, thankfully we got the free videos. Staff was very good, bringing gatorade and chicken soup etc. Mind you my hubby has steel stomach, never gets sick so he was not one bit happy. By Wednesday , hubby was somewhat better but still under the weather we went down to beach, had them find us a palapa and we just lounged a bit, not long. Christian from activities asked us to go kayaking or to tequila tasting but no go, hubby still under weather. We had lunch at World Cafe, hubby eating very light, then back to room to rest. We were not happy of course that hubby was sick but I was glad that for once it was not me, since I am the sick one. Wait.. I think it was Wednesday night we went to Seaside Grill, was raining slightly so could not get the best view, but that was fine. ( The Restaurant is only partially covered) I had Arraechera, and they made special bland chicken breast for hubby. He could barely eat. I did have a dessert with whipped cream and berries which was tasty and pretty. The meat again was tough and not flavorful, unusual for arrechera, in what should be a good restaurant. After dinner back to room, hubby not right and tired and angry that now he has lost two days of vacation...little did he know it would get worse.

That night I awoke to vomiting and diarrhea, headache and stomach pains...this went on for night and day for me.. I called my dr. in Guadalajara and he said based on symptoms without lab work, he would say 99% positive we both had food poisoning so he gives me a script for Cipro before each trip and he said to take it, I had already been giving to hubby. So now we are on vacation and both sick...Bethy the concierge and the food and beverage manager, sent us light foods, gatorades, etc..they were very, very sweet and caring, but as hubby got better I was extremely ill. In total we lost 4 days in full, really more as I did not wish to eat much at all when I stared to feel better, due to fear , I just wanted to leave. The antibiotics worked, so by friday, day before departure we were on the way to recovery, but I lingered with squemish feeling.

My hubby spoke with the manager about our loss of vacation time and cost of AI etc., requesting a refund of food portion anyway. They of course had offered us to see their onsite dr. , not necessary. They also tried to say we must have eaten something outside of resort, nope nothing. Had we swam in pools, now that is scary you think we got sick from your pool. No we had not. Did we swim in ocean, nope, so again sick from a swim in ocean??. Drink too much, nope. They said they checked all their food and is fine. Well maybe so but we obviously got something bad. The absolute best they would do for us...a 2 day certificate for a return stay with no expiration. I was too weak to even deal with them. After struggling to pack and heading out saturday morning they had me sign for the certificate, and asked for a good review from me on Trip Advisor, you are kidding right! Feeling still sick I am thinking, not a good deal here, you think I want to come back no way Jose!!! If we had to fly from the states, would we do it for 2 days no way, so we would have to pay for days longer there or elsewhere, we of course could drive there for 2 days but would not. So essentially this whole vacation was a bust!

My overall summary, the resort is old, but they have tried to upgrade things. The food is less than satisfactory for price or even for lower price. The pools are way too small. Beach is nice, but would not make me go back, not that fantastic. The atmosphere is not romantic at all, they try with the canopy bed and fringe on sides etc. , it is family resort feel. The rooms are okay but small and certainly nothing to rave about. The premium alcohol upcharge is a no go for me. The lounges frankly with the Hookahs and all are geared for the twenty something, party animal crowd. Good spring break place. No towel cards, not impo to me and seems it makes reserving chairs easier. No reservations makes for flexibility but also possible long waits. No bracelets, okay that is good for most resorts though many now have nice momento type bracelets. Not that impo to me. The saving grace and what I think makes this resort Anything is the staff. The staff are wonderful. The resort throughout, in restaurants, rooms, pools, beach everywhere is loud, and noisy.

Will I return? ..hmm.. it is one thing to return to a resort cause you had a bad room or one not so great meal etc., but when you get violently ill, and though the onsite staff were great, I do not feel management handled this to their best interest nor mine. (I have been ill a few times before in PV. One at a resort that did nothing, did I ever return nope, will I, nope. Another time, at another resort, they refunded our food money and we have returned as was handled as should be, things do happen it all goes with how it is handled). I could not wait to leave and remained slightly under the weather for a day or two, fortunately we were at a resort that stands our for pampering. So our whole vacation time was not a bust.
I am still undecided if I would return as I still have remains in my mind of how sick we were and how nice the staff were, BUT how poorly management handled it in the end. Plus there was nothing that really had the draw over other resorts for me to say I have to go back and try again. Hubby says he will never return. To him it was terrible and total waste of money. Bad business he says, plus not worth being sick over and the resort did not impress him at all.
So I hold onto the certificate for return , unlikely to use. When I got home I also emailed their corporate headquarters and told them of our stay and they had no regard whatsoever, so that tells me a lot about the chain on a whole.
Very sad to me as this was a long time waited resort to try and Our Dreams stay turned into a Nightmare.

This was I might add one of the hardest reviews I have ever written as due to the staff being so kind it was hard to actually give a true review here. I actually waited till now when our stay was in July to let some of the ill feelings and disappointment wear off. Despite the staff this was a negative stay for us even without the illness, not up to par on food, drinks, or even accomodations. Much better can be found for your dollar.

Thanks for posting a very detailed review.

It is so disappointing when a much anticipated trip is Not good AND you both were ill with food poisoning.
Considering all the other positive places you have been, I would definitely skip this one.

Yes crossed off my list , think I will stick with my favorites. But still have trades to use so have to try some places, this will not be a return.
Food poisoning and the resultant dehydration that can occur can be serious and in someone like myself with the meds I need to take etc...this can turn very serious very quickly, one of reasons why my dr. gives me an antibiotic script before each trip. Hubby is still complaining LOL, I sent him review and he said I was too kind hehehe..

            Wow, nightmare indeed.

And I'm seeing Hookahs in more places lately.
            It's definitely a 20's thing.
Even my nephew pulled one out of his suitcase the other day.

Did you try complaining to RCI?
Maybe getting your exchange fee back since the resort refused to refund you the days you couldn't eat?
I hope you post this on RCI.com as well as tripadvisor.

Cannot remember if I posted on RCI.com or not will have to check. They have no concern about the AI portion of your stay, so no help. I complained and was told you need to take issues of food up with resort...

Yes I asked both my sons immediately about Hookahs and both knew what they were...Feel like I am back in the 70's ( not what I wanted to say but loss of words ( chemo brain hits again sigh).

Anyway I suggest not staying there, JMHO after my nightmare!

Where is this resort in PV? I didn't even know that there is one there. I only got very sick once at a resort in Nuevo Vallarta but never complained because how can you prove that it came from there because we didn't sign up for the AI meal plan like you did but we ate all our meals there except one.

Since you paid for an AI meal plan, they should have reimbursed you.

At our place, lots of people were sick that night because we could hear the plumbing noise during the night. We went to the pharmacy and quite a few people were there buying the same stuff too but they sold us expired merchandise so no wonder that I wasn't getting better at all.

I found this out on the plane back home because the stewardess scolded me for not buying the proper medication. I told her I had so she let me use the first class lavatory but she ripped off the price sticker and it showed that it had expired a long time ago so she must have known about this tactic. : ( I have learned now to check expiration dates much more carefully and go to a pharmacy where locals go and not in a tourist mall!

It is up the mountain on the south side of PV, past Lindo Mar and El Set...you enter on left and go under ...

Only place we ate or drank anything was at resort...Mike never gets sick, and this was proof positive..no doubt...

Yes you need to check expiration dates as a tourist here, we have our usual pharmacies so we are okay. I bring meds with me usually.

They are a part of AM Resorts so Secrets, Now, Amber, Dreams PV and Dreams Vila Magna in NV, Zoetry, Sunscape...

Bad enough we lost vacation time a decent exchange but to be sick on top of it...and then to get a certificate to return, sorry very poor handling..management.
The Hookahs are a reminder of like the Woodstock days to me...( took me all this time to find that word....)..70's into 80's drugs and rock and roll...and hate to say this but truly you think just nicotine is being smoked in these, nah...

Either way not exactly a good representation for a family resort...

Thanks. I have an idea now where it is as we have been to Lindo Mar and El Sid. We even had lunch there together. It isn't far from the Ocho Cascadas Resort either.

What does AM stand for? I have heard some of the other names before but didn't know that Dreams was in Puerto Vallarta too.

Yes I gave those landmarks as I knew you would know them...
AMResorts Collection is all it says...
There is a Dreams in PV and also NV..I heard the NV was nicer, but I am a tad on the scared side to trade into this chain again.
We also stayed in May at their Sunscape Dorado resort in Ixtapa, was less than ideal and many of same issues, but everyone said was the bottom rung of chain so Dreams PV would be better..NOT!

Anyway it was a total bust...so sad..and worse that they did not care enough to try to work on the situation, refund our AI fees for the 4 days and in time, you do get over being sick and might go back..as it stands not for us..not again..
