  • Review: Marriott Maui Ocean Club

We checked into a 1 bedroom unit 3018 on August 27, 2006. Billed as ‘ocean view,’ there was a view of the ocean from the very narrow lanai. But a better view of the parking lot below and several cargo sized dumpsters being utilized for the ‘soft goods’ replacement. We were not on the side facing the current construction of the new Lahaina Villas, but next year construction will begin on this side.

Our unit was fine, nothing special (at least not after the newly renovated unit at the Embassy), but big enough. The master bedroom was bigger than the Embassy master, but the bath was smaller and had no Jacuzzi (but there were two full baths). Same useless kitchen as Embassy except the fridge is a mini fridge (microwave, toaster, coffemaker, minifridge). Two baths helped since there were four of us. There are only 20 rollaways available at the resort, and they cannot be requested in advance. Since we were already on Maui, I arrived early and was lucky to get a rollaway (no charge). Our room was ready even though it was only 9:30 am. It was stuffy and smelled of mildew. I was told the resort was full and we couldn’t be moved, but they changed the air filter and sprayed a lot of some chemical, which helped. It wasn’t too bad, so we managed. We were told we were lucky we weren’t on the construction side, but we got woken up several mornings by noise of moving palettes to/from the dumpsters below, etc… Once the Lahaina side is done, they will move on to this side, not projected to be finished until 2009.

The resort itself is very nice, the pool sort of meanders through the center of the property and has a lot of nice water fall features. There is a separate ‘kiddie pool’ area so you can keep an eye on your little ones without them getting lost, but for bigger kids that want to use the rest of the pool they can easily get out of sight. My kids loved the waterslide here, but it closes at 5 pm (the pool area closes at 9 pm). There are two hot tubs. Although the resort is very large, it is so tastefully landscaped and designed that it doesn't feel big. We were there a week or so after prime summer ended, so it's hard to say how crowded it might feel during peak time, but it was very nice and uncrowded feeling while we were there. Since they were fully booked, I imagine it wouldn't change much, though there'd probably be more kids at the pool during July and earlier in August.

We didn’t eat at the main restaurant, but the sushi place was good (we liked Sansei better, but the Marriott place is not a ‘scene,’ and is convenient). We found the beach grill at the Market Place marginal and pricey.

The beach was very narrow in front of the Marriott when we were there. Also the bottom was very rocky. It was good for surfing (though my son hurt his knee on a rock when he fell, but for swimming/body surfing/boogie boarding, it was better in front of the condos next door and best in front of the Westin Hotel (two resorts down).

The walk from the Marriott to Whaler’s Village isn't too bad, my son went a few times. We found Ka’anapali Beach to be quite commercial, but it is big and beautiful so never felt overly crowded (though the boardwalk at night can get busy).

We did the ‘tour’ of the new fixed price units in the Lahaina building. Low key. The new units are going to be really gorgeous, and the technology they have to show them is pretty impressive (you can click on a unit and see the view it will have, even though they aren’t built yet.) The building currently under construction is being sold as fixed unit/fixed weeks, starting around $55K for the time being. The building going up next will be sold as floating time.

    Avery,

Thanks for the review. The new units sound impressive, and the fact that they are "fixed" is interesting. However, $55,000, is a bit too high for me..........can't wait to see your pictures.............

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Avery, thank you so much for your review and it is rather mixed. A unit that smells of mildew would put me off immediately as I hate that smell just like cigarette smoke but there is no excuse for having a musty smell in a unit. Also, that they can call a condo "ocean view" but you only get a sliver of a view with the main view on a dumpster would really put a damper on our vacation, especially if we had been looking forward so long to an ocean view. View means everything to us when we are staying at the beach.

The more I think about it, the more I start leaning towards renting hotel accommodations again when we want to go to a beach resort with a guarantee that we will get ocean view if we paid for it. They can't pull that shenanigan with a hotel!

Very interesting to hear that the new towers are going to be floating again so the fixed weeks and fixed units obviously didn't sell that well. They were in the beginning and people bought multiple weeks at one time but eventually, they have to sell the left over units that may not be the best time of the year. JMHO. I already assumed this was happening from the price increases. The floating ones keep going up but not the prices of the fixed units, fixed weeks. That alone tells me enough. I thought that the floating ones were selling already for $59,900 and the fixed weeks as high as $117,000 for the most desirable weeks but they were sold out immediately. The prices were listed in TUG when it was first announced.

However, we love our non-floating two weeks we have at the MS because we will never overlook a dumpster! It may not be a Marriott but we like it. However, the Marriott grounds are really very nice and the resort is in walking distance from where the action is.

Avery, I still hope you enjoyed your vacation! Thank goodness, you were too busy sight-seeing so the dumpster view may not have bothered you as much as it would have bothered us but the mildew smell is inexcusable.

        Emmy,

The price may have been up to $59,900, I tried to underestimate rather than overstate it, and I honestly don't recall the exact figure. They do plan on increasing at regular intervals, and we were told the new floating units will start at the price the fixed ones end at (?? time will tell I guess). We thoroughly enjoyed the vacation, despite the marginal unit. It is clear that Marriott favors owners, and exchangers often (not always) get shorted, not different from many other places. That's one of Marriott's selling points 'you can never be guaranteed what you'll get unless you buy it..' We have seen many exchangers be unhappy when checking into Grande Ocean. Also MOC is in a particular bind with the construction, they have a lot of rooms far worse than ours in terms of view for the time being. We didn't mind, since we were with the kids and out and about a lot. If it were ever bad enough, we'd leave (we did spend only a few minutes in the moldy unit at the Maui Banyan, THAT was bad). But I do think if there were only the two of us, I would consider a hotel or at least a smaller resort where I'd have more control over location.

          Angela,

I am having a hard time loading pics; I was able to load a few from Big Island, but am now near my quota and can't figure out how to shrink the pics to load more. I don't have any pics of MOC or the Embassy units since the rooms got trashed before I could get to the camera... but I do have some scenic shots I can email to anyone who wants them.

At this rate, I'm going to have to get a gallery like Emmy has (if only we had a photographer like Emmy in the family)...

            Hi Avery,

I had trouble loading pics on this site at first also. I had to learn to reduce the file size before I could load more than just a couple of photos. Many photos sites will do that automatically but you may need to do it yourself.

Do you have any photo software like Photoshop? If so, find the option that instructs you to save your photos for the web and choose a lower resolution for each photo before you try to upload it.

I've printed your reviews and I'm looking forward to the photos!

            Aloha and welcome home!

I have been using iPhoto and trying to avoid Photoshop. I think the upgrade for iPhoto may solve the problem and will try to get to that at some point not too far off. In the meantime, I was able to sneak in one last pic by changing my avatar
It is a pic of Makalewena Beach on Big Island, not too far from Kona. It is described in Big Island Revealed as accessible via a 'nasty 4 wd road,' and they were NOT kidding. This was a LOT worse than the other 'nasty 4 wd road' we did, this time we had to ditch the jeep halfway and hike, but it was worth it!!! In addition to the great beach, there was a very active tide pool in the rocks at the far side in the pic. When I asked for some help with directions at the front desk, they tried to talk me out of it but I was glad I didn't let them! (Bring water if you go)

                Avery,

Not always true. We only stayed at our home resort twice in Palm Desert. The first time, we got the worst unit one ever could get. We had asked for second floor, a non-smoking unit with a view on the mountains. Guest what we got? A unit downstairs, overlooking the parking lot. I believe it was smoking too. We refused it! Then they got us a unit with the view we wanted but the unit was in terrible shape. The carpets and furniture was stained but they came up immediately and cleaned the unit as good as they could. It was obviously scheduled for refurbishing but we complained so bitterly that we wanted a view so came up with this unit. It is clear to me that the units need more often refurbishing than they do.

Our second visit was wonderful because we got the view we wanted and the unit was sparkling clean. You never know with a timeshare resort if it will be in a good condition or clean because you don't own it. It is not in your control and some resorts do a better job maintaining their resort than others. That is what you need to find out but then it still may differ from resort to resort or if they are old or new.

We exchanged to the Waiohai and got a beautiful unit with a very good view! We could not have been treated better but one owner didn't get this view for which he paid! If he got that unit in the back, I doubt that he was happy. This is why I don't like floating units.

Yes, I am a "timeshared out" timesharer after so many years!

                  Avery,

I took a look at the pictures that you were able to post....very nice. The lanai at the Fairfield, also looks very nice. Did it over-look anything in particular?

I hope you can get the other pictures posted....I'd love to see them.

Avery, I remember posting once before how to do this in iPhoto. I looked it up again and it was with you.

I am not at my Mac but I believe that you can reduce all your photos in one go so it won't take much time. Make sure that you make a CD of all your original images before you make any changes.

This way, you have them too in case your HD crashes like what happened to Frank. After that, have one original set on your computer and play with the duplicate set so you can always start over if you need to by copying the original set again. Be careful with your original images as that is all you have.

Thanks for the compliment too but I no longer have that nice little camera as I gave it away and I haven't replaced it yet with another simple point and shoot camera. My DH really disappointed us with his super duper camera when he took his pictures in Alaska with the TUG cruise. He had the camera in the wrong setting! Give me a simple one and just aim and shoot! Everyone can do this.

                      Angela,

I need you to bag me one of those new units on Flexchange with II whenever it becomes available after Oct 1.

Personally, I don't like the units at MOC. I am not a fan of the 3 hotel unit floor plan without a full kitchen. I got into timesharing to get out of a hotel. When I go there, they give me 3 of them.

The location and the pool are great.

Avery, I looked at your pictures and they are beautiful. I love the little one here too that you showed of the Pe'e Pe'e Falls. Yes, you need to make them a little larger when you put them on the photo server. I believe that the maximum size they show on that server is 800 X 600. I like the 640 X 480 size because that is large enough on a small screen.

I love looking at our pictures and have them playing as a slide show on our computers. The Mac is playing them randomly so I never know what shows up next. Some are very old but it brings back the nice memories instantaneously as if it were yesterday.

Avery, there are many free photo web share sites on the Internet. You may have it with your Mac but there is www.webshots.com/, www.snapfish.com/ and Yahoo or MSN have it too and Google even lets you show movie and video clips for free too. Web Shots let you upload the original size so your family or friends can print from it.

The only difference with the paying ones is that you do not have annoying advertising on the web page and Smugmug gives you unlimited storage space too so I upload all our original photo images there and can find them now in a hurry rather than having to search through CDs. They do not show because I keep them private.
