  • Review: Fairfield Kona Hawaiian Resort

We stayed in a unit in Phase I and couldn't have been happier. My complaints are so few that they are trivial; things like 'wish there were drapes in the bedroom instead of just blinds.'

The unit was Big and Beautiful. Decorated in a retro/vintage Hawaiian theme, down to the retro radio/cd player. Great fabrics, and beautifull Hawaiian quilted bedding. The master was big, with a great footed tub (with jets, yippee) and two sinks. Comfy king bed, big armoire w/tv (never turned it on).

The living room was huge. Big tv in there, too, nicely hidden. Beautiful big lanai with round table and four chairs. It would have been nice to have a lounge chair, but I would have to put that in the 'trivial' category. The lanai had an electric fan over the table, very nice on humid days. The lanai looked out over the pool/hot tub but they were mostly obscured by mature trees/foliage. There were some geckos, but not a lot and they didn't bother us. We did find the hot tub small and often crowded. The noise was only a bother one night and security quickly took care of it.

The kitchen had everything we could need, and the counter stools were fine. We preferred eating on the lanai so didn't miss having a more formal eating area indoors. I guess that's why the living room seemed so large, and given a choice I'd keep it the way it is.

The second bedroom had a queen bed, also with a beautiful quilt. There was an armoire, but there was no tv despite the empty shelf for one. I was told the Phase I units d/n have tvs in the 2nd bedroom but that the newer units do. It worked out great, our kids actually read books at night before going to sleep, instead of staying up way too late watching tv.

The second bath had a shower but no tub, and had a washer/dryer.

I didn't get to see the newer part of the resort as we were always on the go, but I wouldn't hesitate to stay in the older units again. I posted some pics on the photoserver, though I am no photographer (I also can't figure out how to post the link here without posting the link to all my photos, and the files are too big to attach to this post).

The resort is a long walk from Kona town, but they lent my son a bicycle one day so he could go on his own. He got back in time for a ukelele lesson (which he put to good use while we waited for an interisland flight, much to the chagrin of other waiting passengers), but we d/n participate in any other activities at the resort since we were on the go in our 4wd using the Big Island Revealed guide to get to some 'hard to find' places, etc..

There is WiFi in the lobby, but not in the units (ok that's a bit more than trivial for me). The part of Kona town near the resort is charming by day but can get a bit seedy at night. There were groups of mostly young people hanging out on the rocks drinking and getting high, and a guy staying nearby got beat up pretty bad one night. It was reported as a robbery and the police were looking around and asking at FFKHV while I was in the lobby. I live in New York and I'm a practical traveler; I'm only mentioning this because it made me think twice about letting my 14 yr old son go into town by himself at night (I didn't let him).

ETA: The resort is not on the beach. There is a snorkeling spot or two you can walk to, but we never got there as we were busy doing 'bigger' trips and these spots looked a bit crowded and were 'roadside.' I am a major beachlover, but this wasn't a drawback for me since we drove to some great beaches (thanks to Big Island Revealed) that would have been ruined (jmho) if there were resorts built on them. So it's a trade-off but I would do it again. Mind you, this was a very active week, not for everyone. If you would rather relax at a resort and go out to the beach for a few hours, sit around the pool, etc., this may not be an ideal destination. But we have much closer destinations (caribbean, cancun, florida, hilton head, etc.) for that, so we planned on a lot of action/adventure and we got it!

Best things we did on Big Island: Snorkeling at Captain Cook's monument (we got there by kayak but there is a hike as an alternative, or you can take a tour boat if you must) and near Place of Refuge, finding secluded beaches accessible only by 'nasty 4 wd roads.'

Tip: if you rent kayaks to go to Captain Cook's monument, don't forget the paddles after you've loaded the kayaks back onto your hood

We loved FFKHV and the Big Island. Can't wait to go back!

Avery, I am so glad you enjoyed this resort and the Big Island too. I knew you would want to go back to Hawaii. Next time, visit Kauai instead of Maui. You will love that Island and it is not as commercial and crowded as Maui is becoming today.

They are ruining that beautiful island for the tourist as well as for their local people! What a shame!

The lyrics of Hawaii 78, popularized by ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO OLE', aka IZ:

If just for a day our king and queen
would visit all these islands and saw everything
How would they 'bout the changing of our land
Could you just imagine if they were around
and saw highways on their sacred grounds
How would they feel if they 'bout this modern city life

Tears would come from each others eyes as
      they would stop to realize
that our people are in great, great danger now

      How would they feel
      would their smiles be content
      rather then cry
cry for the gods, cry for the people
cry for the lands that were taken away
and in it you'll find Hawaii

Could you just imagine if they came back
and saw traffic lights and railroad tracks
How would they feel about this modern city life
Tears would come from each others eyes as
      they would stop to realize
that our land is in great, great danger now

All of the fighting that the king had done
      to conquer all these islands
      now there's condominiums
How would he feel if saw Hawaii now

      How would he feel
      would his smiles be content
      rather then cry
cry for the gods, cry for the people
cry for the lands that were taken away
and in it you'll find Hawaii

        Avery,

Great review, The Fairfield sounds terrific.............sounds like you really had a wonderful time.

The lanai had an electric fan over the table, very nice on humid days. The lanai looked out over the pool/hot tub but they were mostly obscured by mature trees/foliage.
Ignore my question on the "Maui" post, regarding the lanai.........I didn't see this review until now.....

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

          I can't wait to go

          Avery,

Thanks for the review. I'm really happy that we were able to get this place at the last minute. We leave in three weeks! I only hope the reports in another thread about Fairfield overbooking and giving away confirmed units isn't true here!!

Your review and great photos answered most of my questions about the resort. I wondered if they had hairdryers then I saw the one mounted on the wall in the bathroom. Also glad to see they have a CD player. Does the TV have a DVD player? Wonder if they could get me a good deal on the Hawaiian quilt bedspread, those look so pretty.

Was your unit assigned on your confirmation or did you call to request the upstairs? Do you know if the units are assigned by what day of the week you arrive? We don't check in until Sunday so I hope all the good units aren't taken. Our confirmation with RCI hasn't arrived yet but the website says to call the resort 48 hours prior to arrival.

I hope to request a top floor unit with some sort of view other than a parking lot. Your pool view looked great. My DH commented on your photo of all the lush foliage around your lanai. We usually eat all our meals on our lanai even at the places that have indoor dining tables so I agree with you about that set up.

I'd love to see more photos if you have time to post them either here or on one of the photo sites.

          Thanks for posting!

            Pam,

I'm glad you found my review/pics helpful. I am not going to be able to load any more photos as it is too complicated (I'd have to take off the ones I've posted and resize them in order to post more, which would still be a limited amount). So I am looking into getting a photo webpage, but it may take a while. If you send me a PM with your email, I can email a few more if you like, but you've gotten to see most of the ones I have of FFKHV, the others are more scenery, etc.

As for room location, I did call to request an upstairs unit about a week ahead of time (my confirmation from SFX had no unit # on it). They were very non-committal on the phone and said that owners get first choice of those, so I felt lucky to get one. Having said that, I don't think a downstairs unit would be too bad as they are raised up a bit. The people downstairs from us faced the pool fence, but it was lushly planted and they seemed to enjoy outside well enough. I was thinking they were lucky to be underneath us, though, since we were late sleepers, out all day, and quiet at night

I have no idea about a DVD player, sorry. I didn't watch tv for three whole weeks!! The kids watched some at night, but were content with whatever they could find on the available channels.

The units are assigned by day of arrival, but not in a way that should affect the quality of your unit location. There are three 'groups,' divided by Fri/Sat/Sun checkin, but I think they are done this way to maximize housekeeping staff and don't have anything to do with upstairs v. downstairs, view, etc...

I'm glad you got your dates, have a great time and let us know how it goes!

            Avery

It would look great in our house. I've looked at them before and they are quite expensive.

I always prefer a top floor unit even when we go places without a view because they are quieter. It seems we often get people above us with 6 loud adults and 10 children (at least it SEEMS that way) who run laps around the condo all day and night. We have a running joke about people with "bowling ball feet."

We usually spend our evening time listening to music and reading but I do sometimes bring a couple of movies. I'll check with the office when I call to find out about a player.

I like picturetrail.com for photos if you are looking for a photo site. I had already uploaded most of my photos to yahoo photos and I'm too lazy to reload them to another site. Picture trail displays the photos in a larger size than Yahoo does but Yahoo says they are upgrading their photo site so I'll wait and see if it improves. Webshots.com seems pretty good too.

Emmy also recommended Webshots; I need to find out if I will be able to keep some photos private while posting links to others, or if one link will logically be able to be traced to others, which I wouldn't like.

Every photo website I've ever used (and I've tried quite a few) had an option to keep an album private (i.e. password protected). Only people who you give the password to can see those albums while you can have other albums as public.

Since the yahoo photo site is free I simply have more than one account. One for my timeshare photos that I post on these boards, another for private photos that I give out to family, and another for photos for a group of business trip photos that I give out to that group of people.
