  • Review Kahana Falls, Maui

My first trip to Hawaii and it didn't really matter where I got to stay!

Kahana Falls is 14-15 years old and it's a relatively small place. I got a 1 BR/1 Bath that slept 4. I had asked for a high level room with a peak at the ocean. They tell you ahead of time that there is no view as they are across the street from the ocean. Although I didn't get the high room, I did have a nice peak at the ocean through my dining area window so they did meet my request.

We had a full kitchen, a dining area, a sleep sofa and a queen bed in the bedroom. The sleep sofa was brand new - they are replacing the sofas and refrigerators. Deliveries still going on while we were there.

The place was kind of small, but since there were just 2 of us, it was OK. And we were in Maui - we weren't going to spend much time in the room anyway. I got a peak at a "B" unit - the studio. Try not to get one of those. It was tiny and the bed was nearly up against the window with just a little space to walk around it to get into the bed.

Check-in was smooth. No request for us to attend a timeshare meeting. But they also forgot to tell us about the (Maui) activities meeting that they have each morning. I already knew about the Mai Tai party on Mondays. The drinks weren't great, but there were some youngsters from a Hawaiian immersion school who sang and danced for us. They were quite good. I was pleased that we made the time to go.

There is a small pool, with 2 waterfalls falling into it. There is an attached shallow pool for kids and a hot tub. Didn't use any of them but they had people sitting around them most of the time and a few people were in the pool from time to time.

We made arrangements to take a snorkeling tour through the "concierge". We got a 10% discount because we are RCI members. Then came the "you can save $150" pitch. We ended up going on the Embassy Ka'anapali TS presentation. Didn't buy - but that's a place I'd love to stay at.

Daily trash pickup with towels if you wanted them. Midweek cleanup. There are also towels available from housekeeping for the beach, but there is a $25 deposit per towel. I'd brought my own so I didn't use the service.

I'd be happy to stay there again, but I've got my sights on that Embassy.

Glad you had a nice time on your first trip to Hawaii

Thanks for the review.....it sounds like it will be just fine for the family for two weeks next summer. Did you check out the beach accross the street? Can kids play in the sand at water's edge there? I know from the reviews there are better beaches with a short drive....just wondering what to really expect if we just want to walk accross the street while at the resort.

Also.....do they still promote that as the Embassy?.....or have they changed the name now that Sunterra has taken over?

Kahana Villas next door to Kahana Falls is a gem!

We are staying at Kahana Falls next May, a week I grabbed months ago, before our last trip to Maui in July. Anyway, we stopped in to see a unit at Kahana Falls, we have a two bedroom confirmed. I loved the resort, very cozy, the units were smaller than many, but the furniture was nice and the kitchen is also very nice. The studio side is very small, both sides have nice bathtubs, even jacuzzi in the master, maybe even in the lockout portion as well (I cannot remember?). The grounds are very nice, the pool is small but the hot tubs looked inviting, lava rock surrounding the areas. We are looking forward to it, except for the queen bed, since we are used to a king at home. Rick likes sleeping in the middle of the bed.

Ironically, even though almost all reviews I have seen about Kahana Villas are bad,we just loved that resort. All two bedrooms have ocean views to die for. Absolutely wonderful place, the unit was large, we loved it and some of you know me as picky. The carpet was slightly stained, but the furniture was all brand new, the kitchen well equipped, the washer/dryer unit was great, the king bed was comfortable. Everything was clean, the place was attractively decorated with lots of nice pictures and artificial greenery. The balcony/lanai was very nice and was perfect for staring at the ocean.

I was so impressed that I would almost consider a purchase of Villas, except for the fact that I would have to deal with Consolidated. They are AWFUL. If I did buy something else that is managed by Consolidated, it would be a Koa unit at Hono Koa. They ARE the best thing on Maui, because of the reasonable cost. By the way, Mele (at Gardens where we own) and Nelani (?)(at Hono Koa) are the exceptions to the "Consolidated is awful" opinion that Rick and I have. They are just yucky, the sleaziest salespeople in an industry of sleazy people.

I have a week at the Kahana Falls starting 6/24/07. Some reviews don't make the resort sound very appealing, but some people like the intimacy of the resort. I was considering starting another search for Maui at a different resort, and then cancel the Kahana Falls unit if another resort comes through. I have mixed ideas on this also.

The beach is small and narrow across the street. The official access is kind of difficult to find, but it's alongside the Kahana Sands. I think if you ask at the desk, they'll be able to give you some good directions. Still, it's close by and it's not a bad beach. The waves are milder there than at other locations - at least they were in the few minutes that we spent there.

Yes, even though it's a Sunterra, they seem to still be calling the resort Embassy. Maybe the signs haven't been changed yet, but we were told by the concierge that it was Embassy. I was surprised at the sales presentation to hear that it's a Sunterra. Since I am already a Sunterra owner, they offered me a 10% discount. Big whoop. :-)

The Sunterra Kaanapali resort timeshare presentation is a nightmare of promises and lies. I was having a difficult time listening to it for 2 1/2 hours. You read that right. They say 90 minutes, but it goes on and on and on.......

I enjoyed the discount on the luau, but will never attend that one again. At least we got it on a huge discount. We couldn't get the Old Lahaina and ended up at the Royal Lahaina.

              Royal Lahaina

              Hi Cindy,
How did you like the Royal Lahiana luau? We ate dinner at the restuarant there on Thursday night. They had a singer and a hula dancer and the food was quite good. After dinner we walked down the beach and the music from the Royal Lahaina Luau that we heard sounded like electric guitars. Not quite traditional Luau.

On the other hand, I can't say enough good things about the Old Lahaina Luau. The food was good and the performances were fantastic. We booked in Feb. for our Sept trip. We took the mat seats and ended up in the closest to center stage. Great seats, but even the newly weds said that they'd get regular chair and tables the next time. I was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad - especially for a 53 year old sitting on a pillow for a couple of hours.

The show was okay. I thought the mai tais were good, but the food was not great. I have never enjoyed luau food, but I thought the Maui Marriott had decent fish last year. Too bad that one was gone. I loved the setting and the pina coladas. I also liked that show a little better. Could have been the pina coladas.

I am not a drinker at all, but when I am on the islands, I drink whenever I can. I know that sounds odd, but I have the potential of being a major drinker. My parents were both always drunk on something, and I ain't talking about life, folks. Anyway, not impressive and not who I want to be. Anyway, I really enjoy the buzz those two weeks a year. Enjoying it more often could be a bad thing. Rick was shocked when Mom and I bought a bottle of premixed mai tais to drink in the room on Maui. Really good stuff, that Bacardi ready-to-drink. Costco had it, so it was not expensive. We were missing our nightly mai tais that PAHIO provided that week before.
