  • Trip West Report - Chapter One

Much was written during the planning stage and some while traveling.
Expect to find Trip West Report written in mixed tense: future, present and past. A whole lot was laptop typed from my travel log while in the van, tent or motel room, while thoughts were fresh in my mind. Some may simply be explaining anticipated sights or tomorrows itinerary. Included are NOTEs where I feel someone may derive information for their trip planning. I had much in my log that I’ve eliminated. This is written in broken verse, as I don’t wish to tap so many keys... I’m not a typist.

Service to my country has afforded me the luxury of visiting so many fascinating places. In the shortening years that remain, we hope to take in many more.

While a crewmember flying Early Warning Barrier missions out of Midway Is., we resided on Oahu. That was back in ’60-’61. Hawaii had just become a state and Caroll and I were newly weds.

Whidbey Island (Puget Sound) was home base while a crewman on anti-submarine patrols. Flying out of Kodiak, we covered the Aleutian Islands and North Pacific. That was unique.

Was fortunate to get duty in Spain, to get but a small taste of FREE Europe between Gibraltar and Copenhagen, with brief visits in Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Shipboard assignments allowed enjoyable two or three day stopovers at Majorca, Malta, Athens, a couple Greek Islands and Istanbul. Even dropped into the Azores twice.

I’ve been drawn to return to a most impressive region, Chamonix Valley and Mont-blanc in France to the Italian border. Too, I’d like to spend much time in that region of Spain to the west of Madrid, above Portugal. But then, places in South America sound interesting. No less too, the pristine beaches of the Caribbean and South Pacific.

Wishing to travel without having to return to work, the last day of 2005, I retired. However, before traveling to far-off lands… taking in more from outside our borders, I felt obligated to sample more beauty of these United States of America.

Somewhere I had read that few vacation experiences offer the same freedom, escapism and convenience as an old-fashioned road trip. It is the purest, most natural way to feel refreshed and invigorated while traveling. Economics also spoke of driving.

Alas, a road trip… To be in control! To stay awhile or simply “see then go”. To choose eating and lodging locations as we journeyed. Camping would afford the freedom to venture off-the-beaten-path if so inclined. We could alter the itinerary by turning a corner.

Trip West was viewed not so much as a DO, but more a SEE road trip. We discovered that most of the best areas were already designated as National or State parks, forests or preserves... so much time was spent outlining a route that would connect these most beautiful places. We chose the Designated Scenic Byways featuring gorgeous scenery from the Rockies to the Pacific. This would allow discovery by viewing the countryside from the vehicle.

We didn’t wish for the summer heat being felt in California, Nevada, Arizona and Southern Utah. Then too was the concern of being blocked from northern high elevations by snow in late September.

A seven-week itinerary was prepared for viewing much splendor of the Western United States. Utmost was the rugged majesty of Grand Teton, Glacier and Zion National Parks, but would also encompass the Bad Lands, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Olympic Peninsula, Columbia Gorge, Oregon & California coastlines, Yosemite, and some of “desertland and canyonland USA”. We had relatives and friends scattered about that we planned to visit also. A 9,000-mile journey was laid out.

By the time Trip West was to happen Caroll could no longer enjoy sitting for long periods. Never had we figured on not being young enough to travel together. We had dreamt of doing the National Parks, but Caroll’s bones and joints had been worsening over the years. As bodies grow older, they aren’t able to fulfill some dreams. So much for prolonging those travel plans.
We decided it wasn't good for her to do the trip. I was to go it alone.

Some have asked how I could do Trip West while Caroll remained at home. I had to carry on even when she couldn’t enjoy going along… even if it meant being away from my Darling for such a long time. She knew the dream and didn’t want us both to miss out.

I learned that an old school-days chum that had lost his wife to cancer a year earlier, was to attend a wedding in SD on AUG 25. Gerald also wished to visit his daughter in mid October at Topeka. We decided to join forces and share-ride his conversion van on Trip West.

We decided to head across the northern parks, doing Glacier before mid-September… drive down the Pacific coast and return via desert and canyons in October's cool. We’d camp some, stay cold nights in cabins, and rest well as needed in motels. If route-convenient, I would book military lodging.

Well, for two months I've been reenacting the journey in my mind, in an attempt to describe the interests in correct sequence and arrange photographs to coincide. Much of it is still in-process, but here goes

    Trip West Chapter One – August 20 - 26
    MICHIGAN, WISCONSIN, MINNESOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA

20 AUG Fly to Michigan - Prep for trip
Sunday - very early. I kissed my darling Caroll goodbye and SIL Dan dropped me at the Newport News/Williamsburg terminal. My AirTran flight departed at 5:45 AM. Connected through Atlanta: in 7:27 - out 8:15. Landed in Michigan at 10:03. Gerald picked me up at the Flint terminal.

Check on folder "Robert arriving Flint" at the RESORT2ME section of picasa.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

The place was empty. No baggage wait-line. Very nice facility.

We were off, up I-75 toward Bay City and US-10 west into Midland, the home of my childhood. The weather was beautiful.
Lots of good memories, just driving close to where I once lived.
Got married to my sweetheart in Midland, back in 1960.

We visited, shopped for trip necessities, tent and air mattress, etc.
Ate out - fueled the van – packed-up some … and got sleep.

21AUG Prep for trip - Ferry to Wisconsin
Monday - did up laundry - “robbed” Gerald’s pantry - readied his van. And yes, we used a check off list.

4 PM & Odometer reading 194764 – departed Midland up US-10 to Ludington. (It was Pickups-For-Sale alley for the whole 127 miles.) The conversion van gave a most comfortable ride.

Rather than drive around Lake Michigan, we decided to not wear and tear ourselves. Opted for the 4-hr ferry across. Saved time & fuel.
Secured cruise tickets ($168). Refueled van (11.8gal, $34.33). That is a super 16-mpg. We took supper at Jamesport Brewing Co. (mini-brewery) then boarded the USS Badger for the 8 PM departure.

Lake Michigan is big - so is the USS Badger! - largest Great Lakes car ferry. Capacity: 620 passengers - 180 vehicles. We watched as even a giant earthmover got loaded. Plenty of room to roam - spacious outside decks.
    - 4 lounges with a variety of seating and ample table space - Movie lounge
    - 2 television lounges - Quiet room/museum - Galley deli-style snacks
    - Upper Deck Café buffet-style dining – 2 bar service areas - Gift shop
    - 40 private staterooms - KidsPort playroom and video arcade
Available at no additional cost! · feature movies · family fun and games · children's activities and playroom · Badger Bingo · satellite television in two lounges · quiet room/museum
    · overnight parking for passengers not traveling with vehicles
Spend four hours of quality, uninterrupted time with your kids! · KidsPort playroom
    · Organized children's activities led by our crew · Special kids' menu · Video arcade
Took photos as we got underway, heading in the direction of the sun. Sea and sky were calm. We lost sight of Michigan as we sailed into the hazy sunset.

Splurged for a 2-bunk stateroom ($39.90) – opened the window for a wonderful breeze and lounged/dozed for the next 3 hours.

    Robert,

Loved reading this........Your descriptions of the places you've seen, and want to see, are absolutely wonderful. When I got to the part where Caroll remained at home, there were tears in my eyes ~ although I can understand her wanting you to go. I look forward to more chapters, thanks for sharing.

Trip West Report - Chapter One (continued)

        22 AUG
        Visit Redgranite, WI quarry.
        Visit Fort McCoy.
        Visit La Cross, WI.
Tour the Corn Palace at Mitchell, SD.

Tuesday - disembarked at two minutes after midnight. Manitowoc, WI is the home port of the last car ferry on the Great Lakes.

Drove US-10 and 41 toward Oshkosh, then SR-21 to the little town of Omro on the Fox River, - took a room at 12:52. ($51.70). Something woke me, so by 7:10 AM, we were on the road looking for a good Breakfast spot. We found it in Redgranite, WI. Pancake/bacon for Gerald - Texas omelet for me – ($14.86).

NOTE: Dive Sites Across America quarry. In the 1880s Granite paving blocks from here were used in streets until concrete and asphalt became the popular choice for paving. The site closed in the 1920s. Now filled with a 7-acre lake, the quarry was designated a village park in 1995, and is used by scuba instructors for deep-water diving certification The site is composed of a series of cliffs connected by steep drop-offs.

Redgranite to Necedah – fields of Goldenrod. They signal the end of summer.

Hadn’t seen such since school days in Michigan, in the late 50s.

Note: GOLDENROD IS NOT THE CAUSE OF HAY FEVER.

        Wisconsin - beautiful farm fields.

Odometer 195100.3 - refueled at Ft McCoy. 209.4 mi. 12.9gal $37.89Fort McCoy is situated in the Coulee Region of West Central Wisconsin along Hwy 21 between Sparta and Tomah, approximately 35 miles east of LaCrosse. The installation serves as a Regional Training Center that annually supports the year-round training of more than 120,000 active and reserve component U.S. military personnel from all branches of the Armed Forces.
At the Post Exchange I bought walking shoes and we ate a bite.
At noon, we again headed toward Minnesota. 79 degrees. Such a lovely day.
We got onto I-90 at Tomah. We would divert quite a lot, but this would remain our westward corridor for 2700 miles, to well beyond Spokane, WA.

Historic LaCrosse. Great river & bluffs setting. The city’s Main Street ends at Grandad Bluff, which rises 570 feet above the city. The beautiful park atop the bluff offers a stunning view.

12:42 PM - 195142 crossing Mississippi into MN. Beautiful view also from I-90.
Note: If I had driven, Roanoke, VA to Minneapolis - Miles: 1131 - Est. Time: 19 hours

        195345 - 243.4 mi. Hungry! Stopped to fuel at Jackson. Sandwiches=$5.38 - 19 gal, $57.

        5:48PM - 195422.6 Entered SOUTH DAKOTA.

7:02 PM - exit 330 into Mitchell, to tour the Corn Palace. Glad we are doing this, it’s really a work of art.

        http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/SDMITcorn.html

The Corn Palace is a tribute to the agricultural heritage of South Dakota. It serves as a multi-use facility hosting stage shows and sports events.
Exterior decorations are completely stripped down and new murals are created each year. Thousands of bushels of corn, grain, grasses, wild oats, brome grass, blue grass, rye, straw and wheat are applied, with each mural depicting an important facet of the lifestyle of South Dakota.
The inside halls are lined with huge pictures of the decorated palace over the many years… Quite an art gallery, well worth viewing for two hours!

The streets are being set up for carnival. Tomorrow is Corn Harvest Festival. With the crowd in town, we are looking to lodge farther down the road.

White Lake appears normal. White Lake Motel ($48.60) - Supper $10 - 195542.5 - refueled 12.42 gal ($36.86) So glad we didn’t stay in Mitchell, we’d have missed this place. A great choice this would be for camping, water recreation and fishing. We see why it is so popular with pheasant-hunters.

Btw, White Lake was named South Dakota Community of the Year 2000.

Did you fly the EC-121 and P-2V or P-3? I was the navigator on the last operational EC-121 ferried from Guam back to the US in the early '70s.

Navy WVs or Airforce EC-121, pretty much the same. As a Naval Aviation Electronics Technician, I flew Willey Victors on 14 to 15-hour flights out of Midway Island to the Aleutian Islands.

Wednesday - after breakfast at White Lake we headed west toward our next stop, the Pioneer Auto Show.
Viewed southern South Dakota rolling grasslands for many miles, only a few towns.

Just west of Chaimberlain, SD we crossed the Missouri River.

                    http://www.timeshareforums.com/photo...erAutoShow.jpg

The guy at the door asked for $15. I replied, “Senior discount?” and told him we were hungry. We paid $8 each to look at a fantastic collection of antique vehicles. We took lunch at the convenient GTO Cafe … not the best, but then, the entry discount helped.

                    http://picasaweb.google.com/RESORT2ME

Headed west again, looking at Southern South Dakota again.
Some shots in the folder labled "SD - Murdo to Badlands" at
                    http://picasaweb.google.com/RESORT2ME

Then on up to Exit 131 – onto the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway – it follows natural contours of rugged and beautifully eroded landscape for 40 miles – stopped at numerous overlooks to appreciate steep canyons and high cliffs. Watched deer and prairie dogs.

This area was once a giant salt-water sea. Look into what happened to make the Badlands? http://www.nps.gov/badl/

The van clunked out on us, the sun was hot. We were stranded with no signal on cell. We’d wait a while and try restarting. When it would start, we’d take off for a mile or two and sometimes only a block. Finally we got a call out to 911. They contacted AAA towing and Park Rangers. Big deal, no one came. Gerald called his son. He suggested loosening the gas cap. That was all it took, the vapor lock was no more.

                    http://picasaweb.google.com/RESORT2ME

We were about traveled out, but wanted to lodge at Ellsworth and didn't wish to leave out a suggested stop. We continued across exit 110 into Wall.
                    http://www.walldrug.com/index.htm
Took a walk down “main street of Wall Drug’s” typical western town. The street is of Cheyenne river rock, the buildings are constructed of native timber and old brick.
The Store got its start during the Depression years by offering Free Ice Water to thirsty travelers and by building its reputation on friendly service.
Talk about a most comprehensive drug store! We even looked at the unique selection of Western items including their authentic native South Dakota jackalopes. I thought the Western decorating accessories section to have items I’d never found anywhere else.
We each bought a fly swatter, thinking they would be handy in the van and when camping. I bought a pin-on compass. It came in handy several times. We found Badland’s postcards, got ice cream malts and left while we still had our billfolds. Interesting establishment.

                    NOTE: NEARBY ATTRACTION http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/blackhills/
Someone also suggested Custer State Park and while you're in the Badlands area...take carrots for the burro's/mules. We seen none.

Headed up I-90 to Exit 67 - overnighting at Cedar Inn, Ellsworth AFB.
We each had a unit as cost was so reasonable.
Were awaken to military personnel exercizing! Time to get up and start a new day. Check for "Ellsworth AFB" at http://picasaweb.google.com/RESORT2ME

Thursday – The Badlands are behind us. We are about 7 miles east of Rapid City, in the Black Hills. Sweeping views of forests lie to the west. Compared to the yesterday, where the prairie rises to meet the sky, this beauty is stunning.

Ellsworth AFB is known as "The Showplace of Strategic Air Command".

We hit the commissary for foodstuff, then browsed the Post Exchange.

Toured the SD Air & Space Museum just outside the front gate. Some of the pictures we shot may be found under "Air & Space Museum - SD" at http://picasaweb.google.com/RESORT2ME

Aircraft do display such amazing engineering. If going this way, stop. Right along I-90... it’s pretty nice & … it’s free!

I-90 Exit 60 on SR-79 to US16 BYP around Ripid City, to US16 south to Keystone. ALT-US16 to Mount Rushmore - six-story high, granite heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into the Black Hills.
                      Mount Rushmore, SD http://www.nps.gov/moru/index.htm

Very easily gotten to. Parking garage, pavilion walkway. Very large tourist type restaurant. It is a great works, but IMO… I would not recommend making a journey just to see Rushmore. The rocky hills are neat to drive around through, but the giant carvings are sort of like another Washington monument, only this one is stuck way out in the middle of the country. It is in an appropriate, very nice mountainous setting.

See "Mt Rushmore - SD" at http://picasaweb.google.com/RESORT2ME

Departed Rushmore westward on SR-244 then south on US-385 to Crazy Horse Mem. They have carved little of it… not much to see. Save your money.

Headed back up US-385, northward passed pretty Pactola Reservoir and on up to historic Deadwood. The entire city is an authentic turn-of-the-century restoration, a one-of-a-kind Wild West town. Historic Mount Moriah Cemetery is the resting place of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane.

Took ALT-US14 through Lead then northward through Spearfish Canyon to Spearfish. Spearfish Canyon Highway winds alongside Spearfish Creek for 20-miles passing through a steep-walled, limestone canyon in the Black Hills.
The road ascends gently, with numerous turnouts to stop and admire the scenery. Watched a guy trout fishing. Pulled over a few times for photos in the canyon… beautiful. (Someone said, “Where some scenes from 'Dancing with Wolves' were filmed.”)

Gerald had booked two nights - All American Motel – Spearfish, SD. Clean and comfortable $82 rooms.

                      Friday – Wedding Day.

Gerald slept in… I got some coffee from the lobby & worked the laptop - Late breakfast next door at Perkins… we lazed.

Gerald needed prescriptions filled at Kmart. We then hung around the beautiful city park, waiting for the families. Visited & took photos.
A very lovely wedding and dinner… only time I’ve ever seen newly-weds ride away on a bicycle built for two! It had playing cards flapping in the spokes and cans clattering along behind.

Saturday - 0850 - left All American Motel of Spearfish in misty rain. Driving out I-90 West, we crossed into WY at 0900. Took Ext#185 onto US-14, then up SR24 headed for Devil's Tower - 130mi - arrived 1030. (Seems a fast trip, but that’s how the log reads) Driving out in that area you see some great rolling hills.

                        Devils Tower National Monument– http://www.nps.gov/deto

The 1347-acre park is covered with pine forests, deciduous woodlands, and prairie grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are supposedly abundant. We saw none.
Gerald walked the base trail from 1052 till 1222. I worked the laptop, studied maps and watched the rock climbers. Left the area at 1230.

From Sheridan to Yellowstone - This is breathtaking scenery. What a most beautiful drive.

Passed through the charming, town of Greybull before reaching the overnight destination of Cody. Stayed at Green Gables Inn.

Note: Cody, WY, is the most popular destination point for anglers driving to Yellowstone National Park from the east. “

In chapter two, we visit Buffalo Bill Dam & the beautiful Shashone River on the short drive through America's most famous national park. We will actually be heading to grab a campsite at South Jenny Lake in Teton NP.

In one week we’ve viewed 1577 miles, from mid-Michigan to just shy of Yellowstone National Park.

This concludes Chapter One. Trip West Chapter Two will be in a separate thread. That will be after the New Year. May even be after our trip to Florida.
