  • Question for Frank or anyone on Italy trip?

The question that was posted on food on US Air prompted me to seek some info on our Italy flights.
We are leaving end of April and are booked on Alitalia. We leave Newark at 11:50 PM. and get to Milan at 1:15 PM Italy time. I am assuming we will not be fed, Frank what airlines were you on and what was your experience?ust want to decide if we need to bring something along for the trip. We will have some snacks but do we need to get some sandwhiches also.
Also, do you know what the regs are now with international flights, can you bring a bottle of water as carry on or is that still restricted? Also I understand that you are restricted to one carry on bag on international and not the one bag plus one personnal item like domestic flights, but I haven't been able to confirm this as I keep getting different answers from the airline folks.

My other question is on restaurant suggestions. We are doing a tour this time with Perillo because the other folks we are going with wanted to do the tour for our 1st time there. I did get everyone to agree on the tour where you do you own dinners. Would like to find some places more local than touristy. We will be in 5 cities, Milan, Venice, Florence, Sorrento and Rome. Any suggestions on good local restaurants in any of these places?
Thanks for any suggestionsand info anyone can give.

I have not been to Italy. "Through the Back Door" is a series of travel books written by Rick Steeves. He offers tips on finding good places to eat and gives background history of the places.

    Wish I was going!

    Hope

We flew Alitila going but flew Delta back. We also used Ryan air to get from Rome to Venice. No liquids under 3 Oz's. Food on the plane was good and you get wine for free,

Now in Sorentto. We bought the best Sandwich we ever had and the best fresh mozzarella anywhere. Wile walking the streets we found this place that looked like a butcher shop. I have a picture of my son eating the sandwich in front. if you want me to post it let me know. We did not go to Milan so I can't help you there. In Florance there are so many places. buy the Rick Steve's book, Follow that book-as it is the bible of Italy. Same goes for
Venice. Ken if you would like to call me I am free during the week.

        Frank,
Thanks for the info. If you get a chance I would like to see that photo. Sounds like Alitalia treated you pretty good. Hopefully that will be our experience also. Maybe I will take you up on giving you a call. PM me you number if you get a chance.
Too bad about not being able to bring water on board the planes, we always bring a bottle of water on flights I find drinking a lot of water helps with the eyes drying out etc.
Also do you remember about the carry ons, like I had said I heard that for internationa flights you can only have the one item and I know that on domestic flights you can still have a carry on and a personal item like a purse or laptop case etc?
Anyway thanks to you and to Hope on the info on Rick Steeves book, I will look for it today when I get out to Borders.

You may well find the rules for carry on are different for your outbound and European flights. Any flight within the EU has the same carry on restrictions i.e. only one item of hand luggage when passing through security. If you have a laptop for example that counts as the one item. You cannot take liquids through security in the EU but can purchase water airside and take on board for flights within the EU. I don't think you can carry any liquids onto US bound flights.
This Link provides all the details.

Ken they do have small bottled water on the plane. You can bring water on the plane but you have to buy it after you enter security. I will look for the pic and try to post it by Monday.

Also if you drink wine Florance I found to have the better wines at a good price. And if you need leather good like a jacket this is where to buy it.
