  • Mayan Palace Trip!!

Well, it finally is here and off Kelli & I go with a direct flight from Clt to Cun. I was attacked at the airport by a ts fellow (he was slick, but I was slicker) I had already made arraingements to get to MP but he wanted me to tour the Westin Regina. Since I wanted to check out the snorkeling there it was a easy yes. They are not allowed into the gates of MP so he was to meet me outside. I was to receive two free escorted trips to Chicken Pizza , ($180 value) , free buffett, & swimming in a cenote. Kelli & I met the lady for breakfast and as soon as that was over Kelli hit the pool at the Westin. All she wanted was for me to be respectful and keep an open mind. Not hard . In & out. She asked me to leave a tip for the waiter as that wasn't included. Huh? Tacky, tacky, had to borrow $2 from Kelli. Laid out by the pool most of the day, deceided not to walk down to the reef area as I was tired and then they put me in a cab, paid the tab, and off to the MP. I did this MOnday AM and spent Sunday by the pool at MP.

When I checked in they said my room wasn't ready yet as I had asked for something close. ( I meant close to the pool, they thought I meant close to the lobby and shuttle) It actually worked out well. I was in the same building as the lobby so just took the shuttle everywhere. I had a horrible view, construction city, but I wasn'[t in my room much. I hadn't hit the pool long when Kelli started yelling at me to come in. Kay & her friend Kathy had found us. I had met Kay on the first Tug cruise and it was great to see her again. Her friend Kathy was a jewel. The 4 of us had a wonderful time hanging around together. That night we took a taxi to Playa Del Carmen where we went to dinner, looked around, and then went to the grocery store to pick up breakfast foods, snacks, etc. I almost had a heartattack when Kelli's & I my bill at the pool bar was $24 for 2 cheeseburgers, fries, and cokes. For those of you who thought it was reasonable, I didn't. I guess it's realative.

    Con't Tues/ Chicken Pizza

Since this was about my 5th trip to the Cancun area and since I got a free trip, we hopped on the bus tour to Chichen Itza. I figured it was about time. It was interesting but I really didn't enjoy it as it was too dang HOT!!! Kelli thought it was really cool but all I did was sit in the shade and take pics. We got our obligatory magnets, t- shirt for neighbor, etc. I was never so glad to see the cenote in my life. I only had about 15 mins in the water. We ate at a very nice restaurant (buffett). It is geared up for tourists as I remember eating here when I went on a tour another time. They had dancers entertaining us. We didn't eat until later in the afternoon and my blood sugar was dropping so very glad to eat. Once we got back we hit the pool to cool off and then off to bed. Kathy & Kay had gone snorkeling but thought it was disorganized and a long walk to meet the boat.

Leslie I had heard when I was at the Rivera Maya that the Mayan palace was about to build another resort in the Cancun Hotel Zona area. Did you hear Any word about that?

BTW there was is a great restaurant on the bottom floor of the Westin Regina. The waiter makes paper roses for you at the table.

Wed: Pool & Snorkeling / Puerta Morales

The three K's (as they will now be known, Kathy, Kay, Kelli) . 2 K's went shopping at Playa del Carmen and Kelli & I went snorkeling at the national park in Playa MOrales. The first stop was just fair and leave it to me to become enthralled and not stay up with the group!! Kelli was doing fine. About the time I'd catch up off they'd go again. I could see the boat so wasn't worried but here comes the leader after me to get me in closer. I just hung on to the life preserver and snorkled along. It was like having my own private tour as he brought rays and star fish up for me to touch. It was a long swim and Kelli & I were worn out. Went to the next reef and Kelli was to tired to do the 2nd part. It was unbelieveable. Huge, and I mean huge brain coral, large fans, fish, etc. I just hung out near the boat and it was marvelous!! I highly recommend it. It was mostly the diversity of the coral that impressed me most. That night Kelli & I ate at the Havana Moon down by the beach. We split a steak, fries and vegetables. They even cut it in two and cooked mine rare and Kelli's medium. The service was just wonderful.

          Thurs/ Xel-Ha

The 3 K's and I went by tour to Xel-Ha. We snorkled, which was pretty good. Just a little tip. Don't pay extra to do a snorkel tour or snuba. The snuba was under the bridge which I just watched them watch the fish. The guided snorkel trip did not go to anywhere that you could not go. It seemed to be a lesson in how to snorkel. The 2 big things were the snorkeling and the river which you go down on an innertube. They evidently aren't made for bottom heavy women because Kelli & Kathy had no problem floating down the river. It says 40 mins, took Kathy & me apx 2 hrs. We finally lost the innertubes, took the life jackets off and floated on them. Partway down the river they have a Cliff of Courage which Kelli loved. You jump off the cliff into the water. It's apx 30 ft high. She did it 5 times!! Wish I had done it!!

Later that night Kelli & I went back into town and ate at a fabulous Italian restaurant. If I can find the business card I will tell you the name as I highly recommend it. We finished our junk shopping and went on back home.
Kathy had to leave Friday am and I had invited them over for breakfast.

Fri: Snorkeling & Goodbyes & Funny story

Kay & Kathy came over for breakfast. I fixed scrambled eggs, bacon, & toast and we said our goodbys to Kathy. I really hated to see her leave. She & Kay were a joy to be around. I definitly hope to stay in touch with both.

Went to the pool and I took off for snorkeling. Kelli had had enough snorkeling so she and Kay hung around the pool. Remember K&K telling me it was a long walk to the boat? I voiced my conserns and he said No Problem Mon. (I thought I was back in Jamaica) I will take you by jet ski!!( Up & back) Not only did I get to go snorkeling I got to ride a jet ski!! What fun!! First stop I found myself floating over 3 huge concrete barrel things in the water. Looked down & the middle one had a curled up moray eel in it. I thought hmm, that looks interesting as I swam away. Few minutes later I couldn't stand it and went back to look again and so help me god as I was floating over it he or she (whatever it was) uncurled and came swimming up and right by me. Whew, that was a little disconcerting, to say the least. The 2nd stop was ok, I think nothing could have compared to the eel.

Back to the pool. They have a neat place near the 2nd swim up bar where they have built tile type loungers in the pool where I was laying, reading a book and working on my tan. I was getting thirsty and there was the cutest little pool boy cleaning the pool. I wanted my bottled water but was too lazy to get up off the chair so asked him for aqua por favor as I pointed at the chair. He says"Aqua" and points at the water in the pool just a grinnin. I laughed and tried aqua again and made a circle with my hand to try to get him to turn around and get it for me. "Aqua" he says, pointing at the water in the pool again. No!! I tried again and gave up. Just then a blond lady walked by and hoping she spoke English I asked her to throw me the bottle. Perfect throw. The water tasted really, really good.

                Sat: Xcaret

I figured I would leave the best for last and go to Xcaret. Took the tour from the resort. What a wonderful, wonderful day. It was not as I remembered it from years gone by. I remembered the underground river where you floated down and came out by the most beautiful white beach. Then you had to walk a long way to get to the dolphins. This time the underground river went on forever with 4 exits. Of course we went the full tour. Kelli thought it was cool. I got out of my lifejacket (again) and used it as a floatation devise. I lost my snorkel and the water was so clear that Kelli found it down on the bottom and enjoyed getting it and bringing it up to me. When we exited we were at the restaurant (near the dolphins) Ate at the buffett and hit the water. I was not impressed. I either couldn't find the white beach or it's no longer there. I asked a worker and he said they only had the 2 beaches so didn't go looking. While Kelli played in the inner tube and went to see the dolphins I went (whereelse) snorkeling. This time it was only one stop of 45 mins and time at a nice beach. Snorkeling was great We cleaned up and was getting ready for the night show when the skys opened up!! I mean hard hard rain. We were watching the horse show and had to run into the gift shop along with everybody else. I thought the night show was outside and stood around waiting to see if it would let up only to find out the night show was inside and covered. Ran in the rain to find a seat and because of the rain the show was late getting started so I didn't miss anything. The first part of the show was the history of Mexico and the ball court game. I couldn't understand a word but it was still good. The 2nd half was music and it was fabulous!!! I loved the male & female soloist. It was incredible and the old men dressed up as old men was unbelievable. Only goes to show that music is the universal language. Made it back home and packed up and got ready to go back home

What a nice trip report and also that you met Kay again from the first TUG cruise. Didn't you meet her again on the Alaska cruise too or is that another lady?

Thanks for posting. I've been curious about this area since I first found out about it (recently) so it's nice to get a current, first hand report. Sounds like you enjoyed it --but what's not to enjoy? Fun in the sun, snorkling and more....

How nice that you got to do so much touring and snorkeling. I went with a group recently that only wanted to hang out poolside and get a tan. Late sleepers too, getting up at noon, some of them. I like to enjoy activities on a vacation, especially in a paradise like the Yucatan of Mexico.

Glad you had fun, Shaggy! Thanks for posting!

Carol, sorry you didn't have a good time with us. You've made the comment more than once that some of us slept until noon. Kay and the other Pat were up at 7:00 most days. I was always the last one up and I never slept until noon. I needed a relaxing vacation after the year I've had plus I work full time. I go to bed late and get up late. I had a thoroughly enjoyable week. To each his own.

I'm not Shaggy but hopefully I can get you straight on the Kay's.

I'm Kay H and roomed with Shaggy on the 1st TUG cruise and went on the whale watch with you on the 2nd TUG cruise. You also sat with my sister and me for either lunch or dinner on the 2nd TUG cruise one meal. I also post on the Goumbette's forum.

The Kay Shaggy met in Mexiso is Kaye D, who did not go on the 2nd TUG criuse but did go on the 1st.

                            Carol,

I always thought that a vacation was for doing what we want to do when we want to do it. Some peole enjoy being active on vacation and some enjoy relaxing. No one said you had to hang out at the pool if you didn't want to. In fact you did go snorkeling one day. You could have done whatever you wanted and I don't remember hearing you suggest going to Xcaret or Xe Ha.I didn't find you shy so I don't understand why you didn't speak up in Mexico instead of stating after the fact on these boards.

I think that was a low blow to Pat and she didn't deserve it.

Kay, I know that I met you and your sister on the cruise and we took that wonderful whale watching tour together. I wasn´t sure if you were on the first TUG cruise too.

Are you and Shaggy going again next year? We will be in Mexico during that time so couldn´t go on the cruise.
