Writing to you from the Abbey Road.
Pat, just Google "London Weather" for the forecast. From what I can see, the weather may be a bit gloomy for the first day or two when you arrive.
Oh, there is a posting in the Tube re: work being down on the underground from Heathrow into London, so you will probably have to take the Heathrow Express (train) from the airport into Paddington and Paddington to High St. Kensington. All this is clearly marked at you trek your way from the arrival gate to -passport control - luggage claim.
I didn't take the Express. I took the Heathrow Connect train (its 10 minutes slower than the Express) and saved about £9.
Okay, here's the deal......... the weather hasn't been great, but coming to England for the weather isn't what it's about. I'm just glad to be back in the greatest city in the world IMHO. Basically, I plan my day around the weather. On rainy days, it's the theatre, shopping, museums or art galleries. On a sunny day, it's going on the London Walks (HIGHLY recommended) London Walks - Homepage . Went on a couple so far and will report back.
Met some nice folks in the hotel. Have come to really like the Carlton Court.
If you walk one way, it gets a little dodgey (past the Maida Vale Marriott) to the Kilburn Road. Dodgey may be a little strong. More like a lot of dollar stores selling their wares but a lot of good things interspered like Marks & Spencer, etc. Walk the other way and it's very toney - £££££ or $$$$. This is the area towards St. John's Woods.
I treated myself to a great dinner here last night. Enjoyed every last morsel.

Actually, this trip was not expensive, relatively speaking. Thanks to Pat/GrayFal's generosity and getting a decent airfare, the cost for hotel and flight was $614+ $238 (exchange fee and guest certificate). While I was at the hotel's desk, a couple came in and inquired re: rates. They were quoted £120+VAT a night. That translates to £840+ which equals to about $1550 USD. So, all things considered, not bad for the pocketbook.
So, it can be done. Even cheaper if using FF miles which I could, but I would be routed from London - Denver-Boston. Not worth it to me.
Take care and I'll be updating you all soon.

Jeanne.....Sounds like you have traveling to London, down pat. Hopefully, I will get there next year.
Toresano Restaurant looks really nice. I'm glad you had a wonderful meal. Enjoy!!!Angela
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Beags, glad Carleton Court is growing on your, as we always see availability there in the fall - is it mostly studios?
See if you can check out a 1BR for us!
But I think being in London any time of year is a wonderful thing......doing my laundry now to get ready.
Since it has been 27 years since my last trip - I am going to be a tourist all week. Tower of London, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace.
My DD was there in 2006 for 3 weeks thru school so she will drag me around. SS

If you're home tonight, I'll give you a call. These calling cards make it so cheap to call (famous last words).
Great weather today. Summer at last. Went on 2 walking tours and had tea at Fortnum & Mason - £££££. Youch, but the memory is priceless. Got to nap before hitting the pub ce soir.
Carlton is sweet, about a third the size of Allen House and equally as dated, but how much time are you really in your room ? Yes, Allen House is dated, but I hope you get a refurbished room. I never heard of 4D as the rooms are numbered.... 20,30, 41, etc.
B.
