  • Hidden Gem in the NC Mtns

I just got back from 2 days of the most wonderful fun!!! My nextdoor neighbors (Bill & Betty), the same ones who went with me to Vegas deceided we needed a break. B & B rented a Toyota Solaris Convertable (sweet!!!) & I paid for the gas. Betty has always wanted to see the Rhodadendrens (sp) at Roan Mtn so off we went. Started off with a delicious breakfast at Cracker Barrell. They have the most delicious strawberry pancakes I've ever eaten, and I am not a pancake lover. Put the top down and enjoyed the breeze thru our hair. Went to Roan Mtn where I took scads of photos. I will upload them soon and let you know when they are ready. I had heard of Little Switzerland but never been there. All I remembered was a travel agent who told me when she wanted to get away she would go to Little Switzerland, and relax with a glass of wine and look out into the scenery. They have all types of accomadations from little chalets, to cottages, to the inn itself. We stayed in the inn (the rooms were nothing special) but oh, the view!!! I felt like I had just found a little slice of heaven. The views were out of this world!! It is at the tip of a mtn and pretty isolated. There were about 4 shops and had a restaurant on site. The room rate included a full breakfast buffett which was excellent. We ate supper there that night and the prime rib was right on!! and B&B had fresh trout with a pecan sauce that was to die for. After walking around the grounds we called it a night.

Bill got up early and went fishing while we slept in and after a hearty breakfast we hit the shops where I found a little gallery that had a lot of jewelry that I had already bought from several of the artisans. I picked out a hand blown happy fish to remind me of our trip.We then headed to the gem minds to look for "finds" We each bought a bucket of dirt for $20 and proceeded to wash out the sand to see what was left. We found all sorts of stuff, rubys, emeralds, tiger eye, topaz and all kinds of things. What fun!! Betty was hooked!! I know that the dirt is embellished but the rocks sure were pretty. From there we found a little restaurant overlooking the gorgeous mtns where I was the different one. They all ate cheeseburgers and I had a wonderful turkey salad. With our bellys full we took off again, flying down the mtn road laughing our heads off at my crazy Kelli. She is sooo funny. It was her turn to ride up front and Betty & I were sitting in the back laughing so hard that our bellys were killing us. She was running her mouth a mile a minute and Bill was tuning her out with an occasional yes or a nod of the head. He had shut off Bon JOvi for some peace and quiet. Kelli stopped yakking long enuff to realize no music!! Hey, what happened to Bon Jovi as she cranks up the music!! Betty & I are rolling. I have not laughed so hard in ages. It sure felt good!! I deceided we needed to hike to LInville Falls. What a mistake. I didn't remember the long hike ( not strenuous) just long. It about killed me. I really need to loose some weight and get in better shape. That was very apparent when I was getting out of the car and slipped and landed on the floor of the car. I was stuck and couldn't get out (maybe because I was laughing too hard!!.

If you have a chance, while you are in the beautiful NC mtns, check out Little Switzerland. It is truly a gem!! Happy travels!! Shaggy

It's wonderful all over the Western NC mountains. I'm presently at 4000ft alt up on Balsam Mountain 25miles west of Asheville (on dialup, ugh!) The hummingbirds are feeding from the feeder 5ft from my chair, there's a nest of baby wrens in the box 10ft from my chair. Owls are calling back and forth even at mid-day as a Pilleated woodpeckers. Cardinals, Tohees, Goldfinches, Grossbeaks, and others are on the feeder within arms reach. Chipmunks and box turtles are out on the lawn. The bear has not visited this trip.

Yesterday I went to Maggie Valley to the Trout Festival. A few years back my daughter entered the trout race where they dump hundreds of wooden fish in the stream and the trout that makes it downstream first wins... my daughter's was second ($500). I wasn't feeling lucky w/o my daughter with me so I didn't enter this year.
... not enough time for all the timeshares ®

It sounds wonderful. Anything close to Asheville has to be great as it is such a beautiful area and so are the hummingbirds and all the other birds too.

          Enjoy your vacation!

Nice country, but I hear a crazy woman from Mississippi lives there now whih may deter some tourism.

Please post links to your areas in NC as I love that place.

I was at Mountainair, NC (near Burnsville) last month in a friends place and the gated development was awesome with a private golf course and private airstrip.

It is pretty close to Little Switzerland, but there are no hotels or timeshares there. The homes range from $500k-$3m. I think you can rent via VRBO or some local rentals, but they discourage rentals there as they are pretty private. Great clubhouse and kids center and nature activities.

The golf course (lots of elevation changes) was one of the nicest I have ever played on and was a total blast for someone coming from flatland Florida.
