  • Mom & Pops & diners ? of the week

Everyone is always asking about the nice places to eat for special occasions or something special on vacation. How about mom & pops and/or diners? I always like to find where the locals go. Usually the food is good and cheap.

In MB I always go to Hoskins. At Zion I still haven't forgotten the Bumbleberry Pie @ the Bumbleberry Inn (almost 20 yrs ago) In Branson I'd head back to the Shack (downtown) for their fried chicken. In Buffalo, I'd go back to Como's (family owned but not a diner type)

    What are your favorites? shaggy

In Las Vegas and Henderson, NV, some of my favorite places are Village Pub (owned by the Ellis Island people), Timbers, and Seven Hills Bar and Grill. All of them are reasonably priced. Village Pub has $4.95 specials every evening (one day is pot roast, one day half a chicken), including soup or salad. Timbers is the best steak in town (its a fork tender, well seasoned T-bone), for about $16.

Funny you said Mothers in NOLA. I ate there right before the tug cruise and it was the best food all week. Their greens were awesome as well as the red beans and rice , and the sandwiches, oh my!! I just gained 5 more pounds just thinking of it. shaggy

          Lester's

Lester's Diner in Fort Lauderdale. Not very far from the airport. Recommend the fried catfish, the Monte Cristo, and the desserts will make you swoon!!

            Mel's Diner - SW Florida

We like Mel's diner in SW Florida. There are a number of them, so perhaps Mel's is out of the league of "Mom & Pop" diners. Anyway, the food is good and they are always busy. We go for the grouper dinners - they usually have a Grouper Fest in May/June. The only other thing we have eater there are the breakfasts - pancakes & eggs. You'll find Mel's in Naples, Bonita Beach, Fort Myers area.

I can't tell you the name of the place but after 17 years I haven't forgotten it.
In 1989 I was driving through Kansas on a cross country trip. I stopped in Ft. Hays for lunch at a diner that was terrific. They had about four waitresses and not one of them was under 70. I got lots of "honey's" and "sweeties" from them. The food was either from the menu or a buffet. I ate from the buffet and the food was like right out of mother's kitchen. About an hour out of town I had to stop and sleep it off.
All I remember about location is south of the highway and east side of the street.

Kenny, that was cute. It's funny how we can remember memorable meals from long ago. I just thought of another place. On the way from Orlando to Tampa called the Branch Ranch. You choose one main entree and they bring a zillion vegetables and stuff to go along with it. Sort of like Lambertis near Branson without the "throwed rolls" shaggy

                  Panama City Beach

Can't remember the name, but the restaurant across Beachfront Road from Landmark Resort in Panama City Beach has the best breakfast anywhere along the beach. When staying at Panama City Beach Resort east of there we always drive down to this restaurant for breakfast. When staying at Landmark we just walk across the highway. It may be Mike's Diner, but I am not sure. It is right by the little minit mart.

"Mom's" in Red Lion OH, just a few miles east of Middletown on Rt. 122. The first thing you did was order your pie! They were home made by the lady next door and were listed on a blackboard. I don't know if it is still there or not, but it was always full at lunch time.
