I always preplan for all our trips. I hate getting to a location only to find ourselves sitting around in the condo trying to figure out where to go and what to do. Such a waste in my opinion of my precious vacation time! I ask friends, rely on these types of boards and call the resort several times as well. I like to have a feel for how much spending money we will burn through and this helps minimize surprises. I also find that I can talk up things to the family if I think we may do something outside their comfort zone. 
We usually do not plan where we are eating. Just the activities of the day. We are flexible. We usually have several options and adjust for the weather. It really works out well for us. My husband and kids always say that they have never gone on a vacation that wasn't terrific so pre-planning has definitely worked well for us.
