I tried to do this and can't get it to work. Is it only good if you are booking a ticket right away?

Seems to me that Delta miles go a lot farther than Amex points go in Delta so I'd like to do it if it'll let me.

No need to book anything, just transfer as many/few as you want. I have done it in the past with no problems but with the many IT screwups on the Delta Web site, it would not surprise me that you may have trouble.

Transferring AA miles for bonus does work

It does work.

I just transferred miles from my AX Starwood card to American and received a 25 % bonus in miles or points. It does take about 12 days for the miles to appear in the American frequent flyer account.
