I had free seats in Italy with Ryan air. It still cost me for each suitcase and plus you pay the taxes.
Keep in mind that Ryan air will get you into some key places but it uses smaller airports that might be further away. It might cost you more for a cab than if you had used someone else to fly into a key airport. Also they are very strict on size/weight limits of luggage. Costumer service is no were in sight. Get there early as it can be like a zoo. You sit were ever you like on the plane so if you are in the back of the line when boarding your family could get split up.

I posted this on TST as well.

Most of the European LCC's have stricter weight limits on luggage than international carriers. If you are over the limit you have to pay. Of course, I always travel light so that is usually no problem. If you travel on an LCC, it pays to check out their limits ahead of time.

Actually, I like one luggage policy of EasyJet - the only weight limit on carry-on luggage is that one person has to be able to heft it into the overhead bin by themselves. That is a more generous limit than any carrier I know of - LCC or legacy. I try to avoid checking luggage, so that is great by me.

Also, it is important to check out which airports they use. Some are a problem to get to, but not most. There is regular rail and bus service to both Stansted and Luton outside London, and regular bus service to Hahn outside Frankfurt. The Paris airport used by Ryanair is more dicey.
EasyJet has more service into the major airports than Ryanair. Sometimes the airport used by LCC's can actually be more convenient. Banesa airport at Bucharest, for example, is much closer to the center of the city than Otopeni, used by the majors, and is right on the very same express bus line, meaning easy connections into the city or between airports.
