Great. Just when I was giving a big yawn about RCI exchange opportunities this morning.

I suppose I could really get riled if I go cruise the carribean section of this ad.

although I saw some amazing last minute properties in the caribbean about 10 to 15 days out for Thanksgiving this year...

This is right on the front page of their site. This is all eastern US (& Canada) availability. I didn't see anything else. And it is definitely off season or last minute availability. It's also not much of a discount. Their normal auction ends up costing $216.

I've taken advantage of them twice. Earlier this month DW & I went to New Bern just to get away. The weather was beautiful & we played golf every other day. At that price we didn't mind checking out 2 days early

At the end of February my whole family is going to Gatlinburg. We have three units reserved in the same resort. Again it's off season but nobody seems to mind.

          R(ental) C(ondominiums) I(nternational) strikes again!

And we wonder why our exchange members are bailing out of ownership of our resorts?

Nonsense like this should motivate our resorts to heavily promote use of independents as an alternative to the RCI ripoff.

Maybe we should all send a link of this page to our resorts, and at the same time links to all of the independent exchange companies.

I got an email from skyauction with the info. I had booked a couple of Jan weeks in HH the week before from their getravelop site (same RCI data base) at $330/ week but they said they have started charging state tax on these weeks so the final came to around $400/ week. Has anyone heard about this tax business on any of the other RCI sites?

Just one more reason to own where you want to go or buy into a mini-system that can give you what you want. Fortunately the only weeks unit I own I bought to use and have no need for RCI. The only other week I own that's with RCI is with HGVC and Hilton's mini-system has also provided me with everything I need.

I'm very glad the majority of my purchases have been to use rather than trade. I can't say that the ability to exchange wasn't high on my list when we purchased our first unit but, over the years I've learned it's important to own resorts you enjoy and in locations you enjoy. I've been fortunate that circumstances have pretty much corrected my early mistakes and I haven't suffered because of exchange companies renting out deposits for profit.

Owners don't need to bail out of their ownership. They just need to bail out of RCI and deny RCI it's rental inventory. There are other exchange companies that will take their deposits for exchange or, they could simply choose to vacation where they own for a few years. I bet it wouldn't take RCI long to come around if the majority of their members choose not to give them their weeks or pay to renew their membership.

One thing is for certain, it would take less time than any class action law suit to correct the situation. If only DAE, SFX and Redweek could get the word out to RCI members that they have an alternative.

Mmm, we're trying to do our bit by limiting spacebanking with RCI.

I have to admit though that RCI did good by us in getting us three really great replacement exchanges for next year when our circumstances changed which meant we had to cancel three existing exchanges.

It was a very pleasant surprise.

Makes us think there's hope for RCI yet.

                    RCI = Rents Condos Instead.
In a single word --- sickening.

I agree that owners do not need to bail out of their ownerships, just start using the independents instead. The problem is that so many of them don't know about the independents, so they just bail out of ownership.

We should all be proactive with our resorts in strongly encouraging them to get the word out on the independents. It is very much in the HOA's interest to do so.
