Not sure if it is worth it but might be worth trying for $9 for a trial.

My friend's daughter belongs. She lives in SC and my friend lives in NY. She can travel on short notice, so it works out well for her.

I joined, but it's hard to find good deals. You have to buy round trip to get the really cheap fares, and Spirit arranges it so that the dates are set up going in the wrong direction for most travelers. For example, I wanted to use the $9 fare club to fly Detroit - Orlando, but the cheap flights were, say, on September 3rd-8th from Orlando to Detroit and on September 12-16th from Detroit to Orlando. So, to book Detroit - Orlando you would have to pay for a regularly priced ticket one way. I feel that it's rarely worth it to buy a regularly priced Spirit ticket, at least not on the Detroit - Orlando route where Southwest often has good deals. (Southwest is so much more pleasant to fly than Spirit.)

What I ended up doing was, I booked a flight from Orlando to Detroit and back, for a total cost of $21. I'm hoping I can just cancel the Orlando to Detroit flight, and still keep the Detroit - Orlando flight. If Spirit will let me do that, then I'll have gotten a one-way Detroit - Orlando flight for $21. But, I'm concerned that they may refuse to cancel just half of the round-trip and will refuse to honor the Detroit - Orlando flight unless I first fly from Orlando to Detroit. In that case, I guess I'll just have to go to Orlando twice in one month!

Do you even have to "cancel" instead of just not showing up for one of the flights? I am sure people don't make flights all the time for various reasons.

I guess you could call them and give them a scenario where you may not make the flight down (or back) due to family emergency/illness and will have to drive the other way and would they honor the ticket.

This reminds me of way back when , when people would buy two RT sale tickets for less than one RT ticket and "mix up" the flights to get the best total price for the actual flights they desired.

This is pretty much what I'm trying to do, except I'd be happy to buy, say, a regularly-priced Southwest ticket one way.

Spirit cancels the return flight if you fail to show up for the outbound flight.

About calling them with an excuse, I have never been able to get Spirit to answer their phone, seriously. I have tried about half-a-dozen times lately; no luck. So, I'd probably have to cancel the outbound flight online (unless someone knows of another phone number of Spirit -- the number I have for them is 800-772-7117). Spirit is an amazingly low-service airline, reminiscent of "People Express" (a.k.a. "Cattle Express") back in the 1980s.

On the other hand, they do sometimes have amazing fares. My dad is currently ill, and although he insists I don't need to fly out and see him (he is planning to drive out to see me in Michigan next month), I want to go visit him in upstate New York if he isn't better soon. Last night, I was able to book round-trip Detroit - La Guardia via Spirit's $9 fare club for $39 for the end of May. La Guardia isn't the airport I'd prefer (I'd like Stewart, Bradley, or Newark), but you can't beat $39 round-trip. If I end up going, I'll take a shuttle to NYC and a train from there. If I don't end up going, I've wasted only $39.

Ah, I didn't know that! While I understand the "it's your sandbox and you get to make the rules" thing, why would they cancel the return if someone misses the outbound?? What do they care, they got paid. Well, ok, it's so people don't do just what we are talking about here.

Yep - can't beat $39 for that flight. What is also nice is that if you DO go, it's not expensive either. So many times we can't do something like you are thinking of because airfare is so expensive.

They email you periodically with all of their deals. There will be some noted that they can only be booked by $9 fare club members.
