When booking a Christmas week flight into the Dominican Republic from JFK we found flights into Puerto Plata going for $900, but flights into Santiago on Delta for just $375. 
The 1 1/2 hour van ride from Santiago to the North Coast goes for about $75, and seems a small price to pay for those kind of savings.
