I will be traveling to San Diego in October. I just booked a round trip airfare on United for $240! My boss agreed that it was worth booking now. I can't imagine that the airfare will drop much from that level.
I've been flying out to SCal from NY for more years than I openly admit to.
Anything under $300 is great and I'll book even LAX on those rates. SAN below $300 is pretty much unheard of from my historicals. (Dear Old Dad lives in Laguna Beach so it is a wash for LAX or SAN. The blue ribbon belongs to Orange County/SNA if non-stop as it's 18 minutes to his house )
I did see a pretty nice fare on Virgin to SAN recently. I will be back out there in Sept so I'm shopping but it wasn't non-stop.
Nice time of year to be there. Hopefully you'll stay an extra day to enjoy yourself

My flights have connections, but I'm used to connections, even though Boston is a busy airport. I have been flying United for the last few years and I continue to fly with them in order to keep my status. I almost always have a stop in ORD or DEN. But the layovers aren't too bad. And with the flight cost so low, my boss didn't choke at the cost to send me out there for training.
