  • Hertz Italiana Spa

I made two trips to Italy last year and pre-paid my car rentals, so the only thing owed should have been road taxes and gas if not returned full. I have never returned a car not full of gas.

Last July I picked up at Rome Airport and returned at Rome Train Station. I filled the car prior to entering Rome out by their Beltway and dropped everyone and bags off at the timeshare in the middle of the city. The needle had dropped off of full so I knew I had to get gas. I filled the car to overflowing 4 blocks from the train station at the only gas I saw, one of those pumps on the side of the street where you had to buy at least so much gas as there was a minimum bill the machine would take. I turned in the car and was charged road taxes. A couple months later I received a charge on my card from Hertz Italiana Spa (Spa is not a SPA it's like Co.). A few weeks later I received a bill for 4 liters of gas and a hefty fill up charge/penalty. I wrote to Hertz USA and Hertz Italiana Spa. They wanted a gas receipt. I said the pump didn't produce one, told them where I had topped off, told them to check my rental record as a GOLD member and see where I had never returned a car less than full. They said no. Back and forth a couple times by email, stonewalled. I finally wrote that they had already spent more administrative effort than the bill was worth and that I would contest with my credit card where it would cost them even more, they finally said that they would not refund the bill but would give a a one time good faith 'credit' for the amount.

Last December Italy again and the car reservation had been booked/pre-paid prior to the above incident. Turned in the car at the airport after having filled the car two miles from the airport, filing the receipt in my passport. Got charged for road taxes at the airport.

Feb09, next international trip, cleaned out my passport. Seven weeks later, four months after my trip to Italy I see a charge for similar amount to first experience on my CC, no bill has ever arrived. Forget Hertz, I gave the above stories to my CC and within three weeks they said that they had researched the transaction and credited my account.

Hertz Italiana Spa is a bunch of crooks, this was two separate locations in Rome with rentals five months apart where they fraudulently charged my credit card way after the turn-in for gas that I didn't need as I had returned the cars full. Beware of Hertz Italiana Spa.
... not enough time for all the timeshares ®

I agree. Hertz Italiana has a scam going. After a trip to Italy I sent the following letter. They refused my request.

    Disputed Hertz Bill

As I have previously stated I rented a car at the Rome, Italy airport on Sept. 26 and planned to return it to the same airport one week later.
During my vacation I discovered a train station that was one hour from Rome and I thought perhaps I might drop off the car there (Chiusi) as they have a Hertz office and take the train in rather than fighting the traffic.
I drove mid-week to Chiusi and asked a Hertz employee if I could drop the car off rather than taking it to Rome. He said, “No problemo.” The morning I returned the car to Chiusi I asked a second employee if there was a problem with dropping it off and whether there would be any additional fees. I was told again everything was fine.
In fact, the employee told me since I had returned it earlier in the day than the contract called for he would knock one day’s rental off the total. (The car was immediately rented before I left the Hertz office; it wasn’t even cleaned.)
I was guaranteed a rate of 477.25 euros (about $685). Imagine my astonishing when I get a bill for about $1,200. No one in the right mind would double the cost of a rental car for a one-hour train ride. It’s absurd.
I believe this to be a scam in which Hertz is participating. If Hertz continues to dispute this amount I hope you will tell them I will write to every travel magazine and travel website and alert tourists going to Italy of this scam.

I got ripped off by a Hertz at the train station in Iverness, Scotland. I searched for the best price on a rental and made my reservation. When I went to pick up the car, the price was not what I was quoted. I was told "Don't worry. You will be charged what we quoted you." Trusting them (never again!) I signed the papers with the higher price. Of course ... the higher price was what I was charged on my credit card when the bill was received. When I protested, I was given a copy of the papers with the higher price that I agreed to with my signature. I'll never do that again ... I thought since it was Hertz, I could trust them. OOPS.

Absolutely, they are scamming foreigners. Myself, I felt put over upon, but when I saw Michael J Davies (mjd1944) had been as well, I knew it was a scam worthy of note.
