Many, many times. Look at my recommendations in the New Orleans forum here. Some additional things to do during Mardi Gras is that, on Saturday before MG, from about Cafe du Monde to the French Market, they have a mask market for most of the day that is not to be missed. On Mardi Gras Day, around noon in the gay area of the Quarter, they have a costume contest that is pretty outrageous. Also, there are parades all day, every day you will be there, going down Canal St. Plan on catching a lot of stuff from the floats.
You should probably also plan on going to one of the formal Mardi Gras Balls. Orpheus is easy to get it. Also, bring some garbage bags and rolling carriers. The parade rolls into the doors of the ballroom at midnight, and you can catch a lot of "loot" and plan on throwing it from your balcony the next day.
Oh, yeah. Get a place at the party at Patout's Bourbon Vieux Room, so you will have balcony access and bathroom access on Bourbon St. all day on Mardi Gras day.
