Shenandoah crossing

Hi,
My wife, the kids and I are going to SHENANDOAH CROSSING in May. We're torn on getting a cabin or going with the Yurts. Any recommendations or advice about the place? Are there any activities that will keep two 9 yr olds occupied?

The Yurts and 3 BR cabins are newer; the 2 BR cabins are older and considerably more rustic. Some people prefer the older units because they feel more like a "real" cabin (the 3 BR are cabins from kits); other prefer the newer units because they're considerably nicer. Although Bluegreen owns at Shenandoah Crossing, they don't manage the whole thing and some owners feel the resort is not as well run when it comes to the condition of the older units.

I've heard few complaints about the resort as a whole, however - there are pools, horseback riding (reserve early - some advise calling the week before you get there), mini golf, animals to pet, etc. The one person I did see gripe at length felt that the resort is the middle of nowhere and there was nothing to do; you do need a car and it's not like Myrtle Beach or Pigeon Forge but I would say there's lots to do, if you either plan for it or ask around. Nearby are Monticello, Charlottesville (smallish kid's museum and the UVA campus), and the Shenandoah National Forest, a bit further is Fredricksburg (about an hour away, lots of museums and whatnot). Washington, D. C. is perhaps two hours away, when the traffic is good - takes much longer when the traffic is heavy.

The resort is pretty much off the beaten track. Gordonsville is not exactly a booming mecca

I would advise planning day trips as Hobbitess has stated. DC is about 2 hours, Richmond 1, VA beach is 3-4 depending on traffic. Shenandoah NP is close, right down 33 about 40 min perhaps.

There are plenty of winery's if Mom and Dad are into tasting..

I live in Charlottesville, about 20 min from SC, and would be happy to answer any specific questions you have.

The resort is pretty much off the beaten track.

Thank goodness not all resorts are in tourist traps (or should I just say heavily congested areas). It's great that BG has such a variety of places to go.

I loved the yurts. and, I've seen the new cabins. If you want a luxury camping experience, try the Yurt. It will be unlike anything you've ever had before. It is like being in a tent with all the amenities of a full condo. So, you feel like you are camping. There is more privacy in the cabins.

I didn't say that was a bad thing. Its all about expectations. I would hate for someone to show up and think there are certain activities based on what they seen at other places, that's all. SC is not a 'hustle bustle' vacation destination.

I've been there several times (day use!!!) and really enjoy just sitting by the pool...

you can hear people talking in the yurts if you walk by them. The three bedroom cabins are nice and new, but I prefer the older cabins. They have lots of nice trees around, and some are much more private than the new ones. I do like the new ones too, though the bedroom with bunk beds only really works if you have kids rather than going with a few couples.
