LOL - all I'm saying is that it is very 'normal' for high temperatures to be in the 90's in Branson, during late July and August. And after factoring in the Heat index, it feels even higher. If you don't like heat, Branson is not the place to visit during the dog days of summer!


P.S. I'm not sure that average high of 85 F is accurate. If you type in Springfield (30 miles to the north) and Harrison (to south) you get a average high of 90 F. Who knows? I live in Springfield, and an average high of 85 just doesn't sound right to me for late July and early August.

Had a cool spell today, after the afternoon downpour. I shouldna left my sunroof open.

According to weather.com, the average high throughout August is 89, 90 or 91.

Our last couple of Augusts have been kinda cool.

Maybe we will get lucky and it will cool a bit next week.

With the DW being a teacher, our vacation timeframe comes down to her schedule. We have been working around her schedule to find a week in March during her spring break and a week during the summer when she isn't doing one of her educational programs for her license. So we end up in Branson in Aug.

She said that next year, she isn't going away for the educational trip, just the local ones, so that may open up our schedule a little more.

I haven't seen it mentioned here before, but if you're planning on going to the Landing anyhow, try to go during the Summer free concert series.

It usually starts at 8pm and it's down in the main area by the fountains. Nice and relaxing and the temperature is a few degrees cooler due to Lake Taneycomo. I've seen several concerts this year, and it's becoming a regular event for us.

Vintner, which BBQ?

What KC BBQ have you had, and what are you having on this trip?

I live in Kansas City so you've hit one of my favorite topics here

Oklahoma Joe's original location in the gas station would be my number one recommendation, followed by the original Arthur Bryant's. The fries at OK Joe's are to die for. The beans are amazing, too.

Last time we visited (2006) we got food from an old gas station, so guessing it was probably Oklahoma Joe's, but I don't remember off the top of my head. I just remember a tough time trying to find a spot to park and then the long line inside.

I won't be going to Famous Dave's. He is headquartered here in Minneapolis and there is a location about 5 miles from home. When I travel, I like to eat local when possible to try other regional flavors.

Yes, that was OK Joe's

The parking at OK Joe's is horrible, and the lines are bad. We only get carryout so I never have to wait in the line but I always feel sorry for the people who are there at peak times! If you go again, go for a really early dinner or something.

Or try Arthur Bryant's or Gates. There is also Jack Stack. And BB's Lawnside. I could go on and on; there is definitely no need to go to a chain when you have so many local greats to choose from

If you enjoy locally brewed beers, have a Boulevard to go with your BBQ. Blvd Wheat is my favorite with their Pale Ale a close second.

You a coffee fan? I can give you the name of my favorite coffee shop i fyou want some seriously great locally roasted coffee.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. It is looking like we will be in the area around 8pm Fri. Hotel is in Overland Park, so we will likely need to find the food and then the hotel. Wish I could get into town earlier to look around, but I am just happy to get KC BBQ.

Overland Park?

Just an FYI in case you don't have a particular reason for going to OP that it is pretty far off your route if you're headed from MN to Ridgedale, MO.

I would think coming from MN you'll be coming in on the northeast, and you'll want to head southeast in the morning. Overland Park is way over on the west side of the metro area.

We are coming down I-35. If we were going direct without the overnight stop, mapquest has us coming in on 435 and then out on 71. The detour to Overland Park for the hotel isn't that far off in the roughly 668 mile trip. KC BBQ Friday night, and a nice priceline hotel with good breakfast in the morning makes it worth the little extra distance.

Funny, when I useta travel, and lived in KC, I went out of my way to eat at Famous Daves. I've done several around Minneapolis, Des Moines, Wichita, two in Omaha, Tulsa, Rogers (AR), Atlanta, and Ft. Myers.

KC-wise, Zardas was the closest and most frequent. Then there was one on Noland Road just south of I-70, in the big discount store that they tore down to build a Price Chopper. That BBQ built a place of it's own across the street to the north. Bates City BBQ was good. Yeah, did Bryants and KC Masterpiece and Gates and others.
