  • OK.... Any chance BGVC wakes up and offers FREE WiFi - How to Tether!

WIFI? I mean, come on! I just can't understand why they are so far behind the times in this area.

The good thing is, MY cell ph (Driod) has an app (PDAnet) where i can get free service anywhere but, I have to use a tether between my Phone and Laptop. I mention this in every Owners update meeting and they always say oneday.

This has been a discussion before. I don't see it happening too soon. I also tether my blackberry, so I don't worry about their wifi.

Could you technical wizzards post instructions on how to do this.
I have a Blackberry with verizon that has internet service. Are there additional fees?
What app/program do I have to download to my Blackberry to make this work?

      BIG thanks in advance....

        What model Blackberry?

U need a USB cable capable of going from your ph to your PC.

Read this. Be careful to check with your local VRZ branch for any possible extra charges.

I have a BB Curve 8330....do you have extra charges with your DROID - I already pay the $29.95 monthly internet access fee for the BB.

Will check out your link later at home.
I do have the cable that came with the phone to since it with computer/calendar.

I pay no extra charges with the Droid. I downloaded PDAnet from the apps on the droid. I have the option to pay a little more for the full version to have HTTPS work. (A security function certain banks/retailers use) but, the free version works fine. Good luck!

I think Verizon charges extra if they realize you are tethering your computer to your phone, but I believe I read someone say that they added tethering service just for the week of their trip and the prorated cost wasn't that bad compared the Waypoint rates.

For my needs of having internet access, I have an add on service with Verizon which is $30/mo. You do not need to have it fully, add it when you need and take off when you don't need, that is how it was explained to me. There has been threads on crackberry.com about an app or program that will get you free service, but it may come at a risk.

You would need to get it set up through verizon and download the program from their site. When I connect my BB to the laptop, I start the program, tell it to connect and there I am on the net.

That is what I have heard as well.

I really don't mind paying a small fee - I seem to pay between $30-$50 for access so at those places/hotels with high fees, $10-15 for a week woud be fine.

If you have AT&T DSL at home it's free at the Bluegreen I recently visited in Solara. Not sure about the other BG resorts but luckily I didn't have to pay.

I have read this on the BG Yahoo Group - but my at home internet/phone/TV is Optimum and my cell is Verizon.
I am able to get optimum wifi service for free at my summer home as it must be near a hot spot - but am interested in the other connection for when I travel in the USA.

This is another option my friend Spence uses - he travels extensively in the US. It is $9.95/month - could be some restrictions but many times a promotional coupon is available to keep it cheap.

From what I have seen (quick scan only) with Boingo, you would need to go to the hot spot. With my tethered BB, I sit at the table at my unit at the resort and do whatever I need, trade stocks, check out the forum, emails, etc. Sure, I pay for my fun, but I can do the fun in private.

                          LOL, private fun

Yes, boingo is related to hotspots - but that hotspot can be the Marriott where they are charging u $14.95 for 24 hours access and I know it covers must airports that charge $$$ per hour.

I do like your "tether" solution better just wanted to let u know other options.

                            Modern Communications

I'm afraid I don't get too worked up about trying to get my email or internet access on vacation. I'm supposed to be on vacation and not working. That is the idea of a vacation. We wonder why people don't get any rest and recharge on vacation....we do it to ourselves.

An example of concerned communication is below:

A man was going to Europe on an extended vacation. He entrusted the beloved family cat to his brother for safe keeping. The next day after arrival in Europe for his vacation, he called his brother.

'How's the cat?' His brother replied, 'The cat is dead.'
The man was so shocked he immediately hung up the phone.

The next day he called his brother again. He told his brother that he could have boken the cat's passing in a more diplomatic manner so the family would be more prepared for the bad news. The man said to his brother that he could have said the cat was on the roof and fell off and was in bad shape. The man would have called back the next day to see how the cat was doing. His brother could have said the cat was doing poorly. After another day and another phone call, the brother could have broken the bad news about the cat's passing. The family could have been much better prepared for the bad news.

At the end of the call, the man asked ' How's Grandma?'
The brother replied, 'She's on the roof.'
