  • Timeshare in Florida count as residency for Disney World Annual Passes

Friends of mine are DVC owners and get a discounted rate on the annual passes to Disney World. They told me it was because they had a Florida timeshare, so they "owned" property in Florida and got the resident rate. Is that right, or is it a DVC benefit?

That is incorrect. DVC Members get discounts on AP's/PAP's because it is a DVC member benefit.

...and timeshares would not otherwise qualify you as a Florida resident.

You need to show your FL drivers license to get the FL resident discount. If you can get one then you can get the discount, if not then no.

This was probably one of those lies told by the salesman that sold them the timeshare. Sort of an "incentive to own property" in the state of FL. I've been told similar stories. My favorite is that I can write off my vacation expenses on my taxes as necessary to expect property I own in another state. Needless to say, that one's hogwash as well.

You CAN actually use your timeshare ownership to get a FL voter registration card. Disney also accepts that as proof of FL residency and will entitle you to the FL resident deals that Disney and Universal offer.

You need to fill out the requisite forms with voter registration.

How does owning a ts in FL make you a Florida resident (which is one of the requirements for obtaining a FL voter registration card)?

I don't think so. This would go back to the old Chicago voting philosophy of vote early and vote often. Under this thought process, one person could potentially vote multiple times during a national election year. All you would have to do is get a voter registration card for each location you own a timeshare and then request an absentee ballot for every location. Somehow, I don't see this happening and, if it is, then that loophole needs to be closed.

You are absolutely correct Doug. To get a voter card you would have to have a valid in state mailing address. A timeshare does not fit the bill (nor would a PO box). Another myth perpetrated easily over the internet that has no basis in reality. People love to believe these things.

I think in the past, before everything was computerized, it was easier to be considered a "resident" of more than one place. Florida was one of those that was easier, but this is no longer the case. In my dealings with Florida, they are now very thorough before giving you any sort of Florida ID card.

I think my original question was phrased incorrectly although the answers do confirm my hunch about receiving any discount. I was trying to ask if Disney, as a business decision, not an entitlement, allows Florida timeshare owners to receive a discounted rate on annual passes. I could argue that this would be a good or bad decision on their part, so it doesn't seem illogical. I was not trying to insinuate that a timeshare ownership makes one a resident of Florida.

The short answer is no, they don't get the residency rate becauase they own a timeshare in FL. The get a discount because the own a timeshare with DVC.

In this day and age it is a more believable lie, since many touristy type things are relaxing requirements, prices, etc., during the economic speedbump.
