  • Which Points are used for reservations when both apply - Chartered vs. Nonchartered?

Background: I have looked multiple times at purchasing additional points. However, with life happening (building a new house, wife graduating college, me looking to go back to college, etc.), my wife and I have not had the opportunity to vacation much. So, additional points did not make sense.

Hopefully, in the coming years, our life will be less “volatile”. So, we should be able to vacation more and now are looking at additional points. We currently have two small packages, 12,000 biannual and 3,000 annual with shell benefit, etc.

My question is: If we purchase non chartered points, can we choose which points to book a room with (chartered vs. nonchartered) if both apply?

Ex. I want to take two vacations a year, one with Shell and one with Bluegreen. I make the Bluegreen reservation first, and if my chartered points are used, then I can’t make my Shell reservation. Will I have the option to specify?

Also, based on the above description, does it not make sense to purchase the least expensive points possible since I have “most” of the benefits (bonus time, shell, travelers plus, etc.) with the above points already (excluding Premier status)? I just don’t see the minimum added benefits paying off, does anyone else?

Sorry the long post. Thanks everyone!

There are two types of points you can own. Qualified and Unqualified. Qualified points are those you purchase directly from a Bluegreen resort or sales center, any points purchased from any source prior to Feb 21, 2007, any Pinnacle point purchased prior to June 1, 2010, or any Pinnacle points purchase after June 1, 2010 for $1.25/point or higher.

If you own ANY qualified points, you are considered an owner with Charter Member benefits. If you have enough qualified points, you become a Premier owner (15000: bronze, 20000: silver, 35000: gold, 60000: platinum). If you don't qualify for Premier, but you have qualified points, you are a VIP owner.

The number of qualified points you own determines your level of ownership (VIP, bronze, silver, gold, platinum). ALL of the points in your account, even if you purchase packages directly from other owners inherits the rights of the level you have achieved.

So, if you own 20000 qualified points and you are a Silver owner and you have 40000 unqualified points, you can use ALL 60000 points for Select Connections reservations.

Thanks for the reply. I should have phrased the question using "Qualified" in place of "Chartered".

If I purchase unqualified points, will I have the option to specify which points to make a reservation with, qualified vs. unqualified points when both apply like in my example above?

If so, this would allow me to save the Qualified points for Shell and use the Unqualified points for Bluegreen normal vacationing, correct?

Boca answered it with his above statement. Since you have qualified points already any unqualified points you purchase can be used just like your qualified points. They are all lumped in as one sum of points. You don't have to worry about which points are being used. BG will use the points that are expiring soonest if they can be used for the reservation which is what you would want.

Interesting post. Would all the points need to be linked? I assumed qualified and unqualified points could not be linked.

It seems that anyone with a 3000 pt annual package would have something of greater value given the new system on resales?

Points cannot be linked. They show as a total in your account. BG knows which are qualified and unqualified but this doesn't mean anything when making reservations. The website shows you your annual (full use), saved, and restricted points. Restricted points can be like the 4000 points that BG gives as a sales tool which cannot be used for red and above, and expire after 1 year I think.

Even if you have nothing but resale points they are handled the same way for reservations, I believe. You just have no perks like Traveler's Plus and they don't count towards premier status.
