  • Pool bar at Marathon

What is the story about the pool bar at Marathon in the keys? Does it have good food? Is it a full bar? I read in an outside review that it has a limited liquor license.

I walked through the complex this summer, it has a nice pool area and views of the gulf. I didn't think to check out a menu while I was there.

Interesting note: After hiking through several miles of The Keys state parks, I learned that a Hammock is what the forested area of he keys is called (the shrub area is called mangrove). So the Hammocks at Marathon is referring to the surrounding terrain not necessarily a place to take a nap. but just for good measure, they do have 4 or more swinging hammocks too.

    Food at the Bar

We were there two years ago. The bar food is basic bar food....chicken fingers, hamburgers and some salads. We found it tasty, so no complaints. We are not big drinkers, but what we ordered were good drinks.

Food's good although most is frozen. All liquor is wine-based spirits. But the view is incredible.

Thanks, I figured it was probably restricted to the types of alcohol that one can get at the grocery store. My brief walk through the Hammocks convinced me that I should visit in the future.

We have always enjoyed our stays at the Hammocks at Marathon. The funny part is it took us several stays to realize that our frozen drinks didn't really have rum in them - that they were wine based. We were told the cost of a liquor license for hard alcohol is cost prohibitive at a resort of this size - I guess they don't sell enough drinks to justify the cost.

Sunsets are really good certain times of the year. Just hold your ears for the canon blast at sunset - it really is pretty loud. Bar tenders have always been pretty friendly and they give you this addicting dice game to play while sitting at the bar - don't remember the name though.

            bar at marathon

I'm guessing you got a handle on the bar situation. They will cook any fish caught on the charter boats so those meals might be tasty.

Looking for some other options head to the Key Fisheries off of 35th street.

I was there last October and had the quesadilla special. It was fabulous! The cook came out to ask how I liked it, anything I needed with it. It was way more substantial and flavorful than I expected for the money and quite good, certainly not 'chain food.'
