  • Hawaii (Oahu) advice needed

    Hi everyone.

I have a reservation for Pono Kai in late March, but airfares were crazy expensive for Saturday to Saturday flights. It was a lot cheaper to fly in to Honolulu a few days earlier and home a day later and take a quick inter-island flight to Kauai on the Saturdays.

For the homeward leg, we (my wife and I) will just stay at a hotel close to the airport with its own shuttle since our flight home is at 7am.

For the arrival I need suggestions on where to stay for 3 nights that is not very expensive (close to $100 per night preferred, must be under $150 with taxes) but is decent/reputable.

I have already checked on the Shell resort through Select Connections but it did not have any openings at the 3-month window. The Travelers Plus rep suggested the Hotel for Points program, but they wanted 13,000-16,000 points for the three nights (at $0.04 per point rate)for a place on Waikiki Beach compared to 4,000 points for the same three nights at the SVC resort. Needless to say, I said no thanks to that.

I have looked at Hotels.com and hotwire.com and there are definitely places in my price range, but I am leary to stay someplace I am not familiar with unless recomended personally to me.

We will likely be going to see the sights while there, so beach front is not required since we would be leaving it to go out and about anyway. Free parking for a rental car is preferred (not likely along Waikiki beach, I know).

    I welcome any suggestions. Thanks
    Bob Johann

We're going to be at the Pono Kai on 2-14 to 2-29-12 and I know what you mean
about flights. We usually go Wednesday to Wednesday because it's a lot
cheaper. It was actually cheaper this year to leave Tuesday, saved $125 a each
      ticket.

We've stayed at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel , it right across the street from the beach
and you can walk to Diamond head, zoo and aquarium. We didn't rent
a car so I don't know about parking but you can get away without renting a
car, if you do a tour they will pick you up at the hotel. The price will be close
to what you want. They had a nice breakfast in the morning. They gave you a
little cooler that you could fill and eat there, take it to your room or go across
      to the beach.

Try RCI exchange, not all resorts are full weeks.

          Contact boca

We did a similar thing on our recent trip to Kauai. Through Jim (bocabum), we rented a few nights at the Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk. We got a 2 bedroom so our prices wouldn't be relevant if you need a studio or one bedroom, but i think we paid about $160 per night.

On Oahu, we would be arriving on 3/21 and departing 3/24 for Kauai.

What did you have in mind?

If at first you don't succeed, try try again....

Thank you to all that responded. On my third attempt to book a stay at the SVC resort using Select Connections, a unit finally opened up. Using points instead of cash definitely is a savings for this stay.
