  • Bluegreen point questions

My husband and I have several questions and hope that you can answer us.

If we buy points in The Falls Village how do we convert/exchange them over to Bluegreen Wilderness Club at Big Cedar? Do we go thru Bluegreen Corporation or thru RCI? We like the cabins at Big Cedar and Christmas Mountain. We stayed at Big Ceder over Christmas and Christmas Mountain last summer .

Is there an exchange/convert fee since it it all within Bluegreen? Is there a site where I can find all this out? We haven't bought yet so I can't get onto the Bluegreen site.

When we do exchange/convert can this be done online or by phone? What time of year or is it on the anniversary date of the points?

We usually go on vacation 2 weeks out of each year and spend about $600-$700 each week on nice places. Usually off Ebay or VRBO. In your personal opinion do you think we should buy a timeshare to replace this?

Thank you for replying to these questions and any other information you have would be helpful. I have been reading some of the forums/BB but I work full time and it is very time consuming.

If you purchase points at Fall Village or any other Bluegreen points resort, you can use them to book reservations at Big Cedar.

In general, if you want to stay at Big Cedar, owning Bluegreen points is a good value because the cost of the maintenance fees are well below the market rate for rental at that resort. The only issue is whether or not you can get the exact unit type you want with a resale purchase. For instance, if you want a 2br cabin for summer, it is very difficult to get unless you are a Premier owner. That is because the cabins are so highly sought after and the point value is low relative to newer units that have been built at Big Cedar. So, Premier owners grab the Cabins on wait list. If you want a studio or 1br, then you should be fine.

      Jim,

How hard is it to get a summer 2 bedroom lodge unit at Big Cedar if you try 11 months out. I was under the impression that lodge units were easy to get providing you did not wait too long.

        Judy,

When you buy BG points they are good for any resort in the BG system without an exchange fee.

You can use BG points with RCI but there is a large exchange fee.

You can reserve BG units 11 months before the reservation starts.

You can reserve online or by phone.

Your points are good for one year but can be extended (saved) for another year for a small fee. Saved points are good only for BG red, white, and blue time. (BG also has high red, leaf, special, etc., time which saved points cannot be used for.)

Due to the economy, you can rent from BG owners fairly cheaply right now. Probably cheaper than MF. If the economy continues to improve, rents will go up and will be more than MF. Right now you can buy BG Points essentially for free if you look in the right places. As the economy improves, purchase prices will also go up.

For more information you can search the messages in this forum. You can also join the BG Yahoo Group and search their FAQ, messages, etc. You can also join the BG Exchange group if you are looking for BG places to rent.

Remember that buying a timeshare means a MF each year no matter what your personal situation is. Whether you should or should not can only be answered by you. My only advice, do not borrow money to buy a timeshare. You never really KNOW what tomorrow brings.

I don't know for sure. A 2br is just a one bedroom and studio combined. So, the only difference is if they are connected units. I imagine it is slightly harder, but not by a lot. Only July 4th week and cabins appear to be hard to get.

            Jim,

Thanks for confirming my understanding that getting a 2 bedroom lodge should not be a problem (except for 4th of July week). I imagine that the reservation people try to pair up studio and 1 bedroom reservations so as to keep 2 bedrooms free as a possibility.
