  • No longer providing room numbers

Well this is relatively new, and I'll admit somewhat disappointing. I had to call a second time just to confirm what I was hearing as it was only a couple of months ago that I was able to get this information.

Apparently due to a number of people not understanding that room numbers can change, and that what you are told 4 months in advance may not be the same as a couple days or weeks before they will no longer provide this information.

Couldn't they have made some sort of disclaimer or something instead so that people like myself and others here who understand that room assignments can change due to the logistics involved at least have something to work with?

Has anybody else had this problem? I was trying to check what unit number a poolside unit at La Cabana would be for the week of July 20th. I am not at all familiar with the resort so not sure how much difference unit # makes even.

Specific rooms were never guaranteed, except what you own. Nothing here has changed except they no longer provide false hope to those who never understood "you might not get that unit" and then complained about having made a specific booking For That Unit.

You will receive unit type reserved (oceanfront vs city view, for example), that has not changed.

For me, it never mattered anyway but I understand that some people are quite upset about it. But there is no disclaimer to make because there was never an official way to book specific units. Nothing has been taken away.

removing the specific unit requests does allow the resort to seek maximum utilization, which can't happen with everyone wanting specific units.

A poolside unit at La Cabana will be first or second floor facing the pool.
      This is a good thing.

I am currently at La Cabana and I would say a pool side unit could also be 3rd or 4th floor.....I absolutely LOVE my 1st floor unit though I would say being behind the restaurant is not most ideal unless you want to catch the bus in front of Amsterdam Manor. It is also very convenient to listen to the band and for beach access. However, you get all the afternoon sun on the patio on this side. By the way, even numbered units face the pool, and odd numbered units are "garden" view (or dumpster or jungle or street--hardly what you would mostly call garden). This side are the Saturday to Saturday deeded units and the other side are the Sunday to Sunday deeded units. Rush is in a Sunday to Sunday deeded unit and we are staying in the same size unit for the same length of time but our reservation is 275 more points because ours hits one day into week 5 which is a higher red season.

At Point at Poipu several years ago they stopped providing room numbers after increasing problems. If the room was being cleaned people would start moving their stuff into the unit even though they hadn't checked in yet and began harassing the help when they were told to not put their stuff in the rooms yet. Then there were some bad scenes in which some people started yelling and screaming when they didn't get their "assigned" room after an elevator malfunction necessitating moving some reservations so that people with disabilities could be properly accommodated.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

          “You shouldn't wear that body.”

I called Big Cedar recently to get unit information, and they said the resort can no longer give unit information because of security. They don't have a good way to verify who is really calling, and they don't want to give out someone's room number to the wrong person. This made sense to me.

However, I was able to get unit information from Bluegreen instead. This was probably about 2 weeks ago.

I always prefaced my request for a room number with "I understand this is subject to change, but I'm curious what unit I'm currently scheduled in?". I hope they haven't done away with this completely.

The way to get your desired room is to make a request at the time you make the reservation. You can request particular floors, or even particular unit numbers. They will tell you that they can not guarantee your request, but they usually honor it (this is an advantage to you as they can easily kick someone out of the room you want because that person hasn't been told the room number yet!).

Have you tried this recently with success?

Most of my requests have been honored. Very useful for combining smaller stays into a larger stay even when the larger stay is not available online.

One of the Bluegreen resorts we stayed at recently said they do not make a note of the requested rooms when you first make a reservation. They advised that we call one week prior to check in. Then they would make a notation in the system. We have not been back so have not tried this.

Marriott will not give out room numbers ahead of time - they quote security reasons. Even if you call the day of check in when they obviously have a good idea of your room number, they will not tell you what room you are assigned to. We even checked in at Ocean Pointe last week and the room wasn't ready - it was still being cleaned. We asked what room it would be and they said they could not tell us. Turns out we switched rooms from what we were originally assigned as the front desk thought one had a better view.
Not assigning rooms ahead of time probably helps them more easily accomodate changes to the reservations. We have sometimes opted to extend our stay. At Marriott and Hyatt they try to keep us in the same room. This often means moving someone else that was scheduled to check in to our room into another room. This would often not be possible if someone checking in was expecting a certain room. At Bluegreen we generally have to move - this may be because guests knew room numbers ahead of time.

Yes, but Recently? The "no room numbers" policy is new. I am curious when last you were able to obtain the unit number in advance.

Yes, recently. But let's be clear. There is a difference between "obtaining the unit number in advance" and putting a unit number in a request. The first can no longer be done. The second is simply making a request, which is never guaranteed (and the reps will be the first to tell you that). Absolutely you can request anything, and many times Bluegreen will fill the request.
