  • Mountain run at Boyne Review.

We just returned from a Sat-Sat vacation there. Since I can't find the site to review resorts anymore, I'll add my review/opinion here.

This is a condensed review...Won't go back.

    Little longer review:
Area-Primarily a winter area, lots of ski runs and resort of Mountain Run (parasite) and primarily Boyne Mountain Resort (host that the parasite lives off) are great for winter. Lots of winter activities and restaurants for the active ski crowd. For the summer crowd, shorter hours on some stores, near empty restaurants.

Resort-Minimalist. They rely on Boyne Mountain resort for entertainment. They have a water park that is pretty impressive. Mountain Run has one small pool with a few tables and one with an umbrella. There is a hot tub, fitness room and amusement room on site. They have activities, but very limited room and options. The resort does not have a lot of buildings, and I believe each building has 4-2 bedroom and 4-1 bedroom units. Two or four buildings share 2 grills. One of the grills for our area wasn't working, so 16/32 units for the 1 grill. Luckily, it wasn't a problem as the resort was practically empty. Apparently, everyone else knew it was a winter/ski destination except me.

Villa-Good. We were in a 2 bedroom. Pretty much standard equipment. Beds are very high and actually would be tough to get into for some people with joint problems. It always makes me concerned (aka mad) when they have non-stick pans and metal utensils. The pans get scratched up which means they get replaced more often and that costs me money.

Internet-DSL. Are you kidding me? All the BG resorts where I have stayed in the last couple years had wireless and pretty fair speed. Mountain run has a wired DSL connection. The deck of our unit faced the main check in building so we could get the wireless from their site, but sitting on the deck in 90 degrees to get the in and out wireless was not the highlight of our day. I was still trying to do business on the internet, but using DSL speed was painful.

Locally-We did travel to Boyne City and Petoskey and found things to do and some great food. I did gain 4 pounds that week, so I can attest to the food. We ate at a bar then Hemingway used to visit. The woodwork was amazing. Food was great. We did some wine tasting, got some smoked fish and checked out the local sites. I took my wife to Cafe Sante in Boyne City for a delayed anniversary dinner. Again, very good food. The resort is about an hour south of the Mackinac bridge and Mackinac island, so if you want to visit this area, it is an easy trip from the resort.

I think Mountain Run is not making advantage of the local events and vendors. They could have people in to talk about their events or products (as they do in Moutainloft at GATLINBURG). This could improve the value of the resort by connecting with the merchants using the 'stay here, visit there' idea.

For us, this was a drive trip (with my SUV being rear ended the day before the start of the trip). We drove from Minneapolis to Green Bay, WI, then on to Mountain Run the next day. It gets to be about 12 hours driving. We drove 1400 miles for the week.

SUV goes into the repair shop on Monday. Hopefully a week later, I will get it back in great shape.

I agree that the Bluegreen side of Boyne does not offer much. But the Mountain Run side was enjoyable. We were here a few weeks ago. At first we were very disappointed with the offerings, but once we figured out where everything was we had a very enjoyable time. We took the free chairlift to the top of the mountain along with our bikes and then rode back down. We did the zipline. And we loved Deere lake. It was a great beach with free kayaks, paddleboats, paddleboards and games.

I live close by, and haven't been in a while. However I will attest that this is not a place to go if your are looking for resort things to do. You can not go here for a week, and expect to be entertained. We like the resort, however we rarely stay on the property so that isn't a really big deal for us. We enjoy taking in the sites, of which there are lots of things to do outside the resort.

Yes, if you treat the resort as a hotel and just do things off site, it is okay. Well, as okay as a hotel (with a kitchen and minimal internet). We did spend more time over at Boyne Mountain that at the resort and really thought that if we come back, we may look into the cost of staying there. It looked really nice.

If we had kids, I am sure they would have really enjoyed the zip line and the water park. I am not much of a water person, but that looked like it could have been fun. I think we should have spent more time in Petoskey. That is a nice looking small town. Neat little shops to visit and maybe explore more restaurants.

The DW and I both agreed that we would rather drive the 4 hours to CMV rather than go back to Mountain Run, but it is what you make of it and we can make more of it at CMV.

Yes, the one bedrooms are quite small if that is what you stayed in. Especially when they have no oven! Petoskey is a much nicer area and town, and we quite frequently head up that way for the casino as well. My parents stayed their last year when they went on a motorcycle ride up through Sault Ste Marie and back down. It really is design more for skiiers, and summer weeks still get a premium. I do have an issue with them charging 4 times as many points for a Friday and Saturday night stay. Getting bonus time during the summer is next to impossible.

Mountain Run is in one of my favorite parts of the world, and it's closer to us than any other BG resort, but we still end up going to Christmas Mountain Village more often. We always manage to entertain ourselves at Mountain Run, but most of the stuff we do there is too slow paced for my sister-in-law and niece. Plus CMV is almost exactly in the middle of the route from our place to my parents' house, and it's a lot closer to a major airport, so it always wins if we're meeting family.

We like the fact that the 2 BR at Mountain Run has two balconies and like both the 2 BR and 1 BR units just fine, except for the kitchen sink/dishwasher set up, which we hate. And I'm not thrilled that I have to get a 3 BR if we bring all five kids along, but the kids like that part just fine. The kids like the activities on the lake that's part of the resort; they usually do the water park at least once; last time we took up some radio controlled planes and they spent an afternoon playing with those; and we like just wandering the local towns or state parks. And we do a lot of just hanging out. It's a nice, relaxing vacation spot we particularly appreciate those years when our other vacation is a trip to Orlando theme parks.

As an original owner at both Boyne and Traverse City since the 70's I can say that yes summers are next to impossible to get units and winters, though more available, are indeed still busy, bustling and energetic times of the year - lots to see and do depending upon what you are in to.

Besides Boyne Mountain you can also drive to Boyne Highlands or Nubs Nob (both located minutes apart) which are outside of Petosky / Harbor springs - the drive could be 45-60 minutes depending upon road conditions, or quicker.

The water park at the mountain will keep kids busy on the non-ski days, when the parents don't want to drive anyplace either ;-)

Traverse city is the BIG city 'Up North' and might also make for a nice day off skiing. I find it enjoyable to explore an area I trade into so that I know what else is around and typically I will go back to the same area on another trip.

If you want specifics about Boyne or similar, private message me. While at Boyne walk over to the "Hemlock" chalets on the other side of the water park - my unit is there. A much more kid / family friendly / community vibe, and larger units - more like condos over hotel rooms (ala Mtn run) should you ever be interested in purchasing, my unit is for sale too.
