This is why I never liked any points system. Just own where you want to go every year for the week(s) you are most likely able to always go or rent if you want to go elsewhere.

Also, I can see them doing this because of Mega Renters. And timeshares weren't meant to be used as 3 months= stays, but for people who want one or a just few vacations each year,

That said- these companies shouldn't sell so many points to one individual owner then in the first place and this type of thing wouldn't happen. But- the almighty dollar wins out every time.
