  • Hammocks in Marathon...things to do?

    Hi all!

I am looking at taking my wife and teenage daughters to the Hammocks in Marathon over Christmas 2015. I wanted to get comments on the units, things to do, etc while we are visiting. The idea of
going to Marathon was to be able to drive to somewhere where we could be relatively certain of getting warm weather since we are coming from Indiana.

Any thoughts or comments are welcome. Thank you!

we drove to Key West one day, Bahia Honda State Park and Beach another day, Key Largo and glass bottomed boa,t and lots to see in Islamaroda area. also looked for Key Deer, went to some place to see dolphins and swim with them, and a guided tour of a place in Marathon, Crane Point Museum, see the old seven mile bridge, turtle hospital, and rent a kayak, or go fishing.

Wow! I've lived in FL for 45 years and have never even done half of these things.

Must be why we come home from our trades all tuckered out.

We were in Marathon in mid March. We had a 2 bedroom (#114) with a nice view of a fence, I guess someone has to have that room. If you can't find your frying pan (toaster, kettles, etc), we found ours in the closet.
Walk along the water just at sunset. Pictures are great from the dock at the resort. Lobsters and many other ocean life are active about sunset. The bar is nice, limited selection on food and booze, but still nice. Watch out for the iguanas. The walk around the bar area like they own the place.

We spent two days in Key West. We found enough history, food and shops/museums that we didn't run out of things to see and do. Parking is a bit difficult. We did find a lot where we could park all day for $40. We found the Conch train valuable to learn about the island and figure out where we wanted to go when we did hop on/hop off the train. We did the 'little white house' (liked it very much) and Hemmingway's house (like the house, not Hemmingway). There are 6 toe cats everywhere.

Marathon has the turtle hospital (we didn't do it-I just didn't want to pay $16-18 to be lectured to) and dolphin research center (and didn't do that either). There is a lot of water related things to do. They guy at the concierge desk provided a lot of suggestions. The suggestion for the owner update is one we should have skipped.

Lobster reuben was good and since you are a tourist, it is fun to have one. Conch is a little tough and chewy, so it can be skipped.

Gas prices are better on the east end of Marathon. From the mid island and west, the prices rose about 20 cents a gallon. We found low of $2.37 to $2.74 in March. Just gives you a reference of price range, prices will be different.

Weather was always amazing. Lows were in the low 70s, high in the mid 80s.

Have fun and just remember that it is vacation, so don't let the traffic get to you.
