First of all this is a great forum - awesome information. We purchased 20000 points/silver membership for $25000 last Friday, May 11. After reading through all the information and all the complaints on the web we are seriously considering cancelling the deal. I am a teacher so prime time (ultra red and up) is the only time my family can vacation.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Do you think I will get the value I paid for due to the cost and availablity of units during the prime weeks? (I figured 2 weeks per year for 20,000 points but when I look at the resort points, I think not.)
    2. How hard is it to actually exchange bonus time for the expensive (in terms of points) weekends after you have rented a week?
    3. Why wouldn't I just buy resale points?
    4. Are the horror stories you find on the web representative of the majority of owners?
    5. I received 2 RCI weeks per year with some serious restrictions that would render them useless because of the teacher schedule - are there ways to create value with these RCI weeks/membership?
    6. Cancel or Keep?

Thank you so much for anyone who takes the time to respond.

I would rescind the contract and read these forums and the forums at TUG before going any further. You should be able to save yourself thousands of dollars on the resale market.

You're asking all the right questions and I think you know the right answers.

Rescind now. Do some research before jumping into timesharing. Find a place or points that will meet your high demand needs- then buy (resale of course).

Just another chiming in to say rescind now, take your time doing research, buy resale. Follow the rescission clause in your contract to the letter.

            Hi PC,

Welcome to our Forum. We can certainly help answer your questions. Feel free to PM me personally and I'd be delighted to help you understand what is real versus what is spin within Bluegreen.

Here are some specific answers to your questions.

            1. Do you think I will get the value I paid for due to the cost and availablity of units during the prime weeks? (I figured 2 weeks per year for 20,000 points but when I look at the resort points, I think not.)
You purchased a Silver Preferred Package. That gets you one month advantage to get on the waitlist for prime weeks. It is definitely helpful in securing hard to get weeks. It is most helpful at Associate resorts where Bluegreen is short on inventory. Some resorts, like Pono Kai and those on the Gulf Coast of Florida requires Silver or Gold ownership to get reliably.

You can get 2 weeks per year with 20000 points. If you want to stay on the Beach in a 2 bedroom unit 2 weeks per year, then you will need more points.

            2. How hard is it to actually exchange bonus time for the expensive (in terms of points) weekends after you have rented a week?
Some people employ this strategy. But, I don't recommend it. Mostly because you will have to change units. And, the only resorts you can do it at are those that have lots of inventory even during prime season. Those resorts include Daytona Seabreeze and The Fountains. It can be done in the off season at a lot of resorts.

            3. Why wouldn't I just buy resale points?
You just need to be careful what you buy resale. You only receive VIP Bonus Time and Preferred owner benefits if you purchase your resale points from an authorized reseller. If you are interested in that option, send me a PM.

            4. Are the horror stories you find on the web representative of the majority of owners?
No, not representative at all. Bluegreen is one of the most owner friendly timeshare companies in the industry. I have worked with them personally to help solve many owner problems. The biggest issue you read about on the internet are related to the sales team. The entire industry has a problem with their sales teams. That's because they work on 100% commission and they must sell you while you are there. So, the tend to stretch the truth and outright lie to get you to sign on the dotted line. I'd say that Bluegreen is about average to above average in terms of the quality and integrity of their sales team. Owner services is far above average.

            5. I received 2 RCI weeks per year with some serious restrictions that would render them useless because of the teacher schedule - are there ways to create value with these RCI weeks/membership?
No, those weeks are last call weeks. You can purchase them yourself for about $200. And, the ironic thing is that you can buy them through your RCI membership that you get as part of your Bluegreen membership fee.

              Teaching and Reserving

My wife and I are both teachers so we know about the lack of flexibility. But, we have an advantage. We knew when we could travel at least a year out so we could reserve at exactly 11 months out. Of course, we were so pleased with BG that we upped our point total to eventually get to gold level so we could wait list 13 months out. We have had a high success rate in getting reservations where and when we wanted. But we were realistic and did not go after the spring break Florida resorts with limited availability.

Also you should note that many fine BG resorts have red time in your prime time. (Ultra red, leaf, lobster, etc., time only pertains to the newer resorts.

The only horror stories we have found to be true are salesmen stories and pressure cooker tactics.
