Newbie question:buy or add points?

I am very new to all this so I apologize if this is a stupid question.

My ILs are bluegreen owners and have been for several years. DH & I have had several vacations using their ownership when they have had extras they were not using or bonuses or whatever as guests or traveling with them. We've always had a great time. We are now interesting in doing some more travelling on our own and are thinking about buying for ourselves. We are not even close to the buying stage yet, just exploring some options. Assuming that we could work it out amongst ourselves, would there be any advantages/disadvantages to just increasing points on our ILs account versus buying ours from scratch?

Yes, the best option is adding your names to their account and adding points that you share. Only do it if you trust them because as with any joint ownership, there could be conflicts that need to be managed.

Here's why it makes sense to share an ownership.

1) They probably already have bonus time. If you are added to the ownership, you will hae access to bonus time as well without having to pay the surcharge you will for buying from Bluegreen or a Bluegreen authorized reseller. Each person on the ownership can have a bonus time reservation for each week of the year.

2) If will probably be easier to get to Silver or Gold preferred. Bluegreen provides great incentives for owning more. If you can combine your ownerships to have 20000 or 35000 qualifying points, you get lots of extra benefits that could be worth it to you. Do a search on preferred member benefits in this forum or send me a PM and I'll share with you the details.

3) If you know how to buy the right deeds, they could all combine for a lower per point maintenance fee. That could be very valuable.

The biggest issue is can all of you trust each other. If yes, then it makes a lot of sense to share an account.
