As promised, here is a summary of our SelectConnections booking at the Shell Vacation Club's Waikiki Marina Resort at the Ilikai in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Everything went very well. I had printed out a copy of Shell's Web page for that resort before I left, which instructed guests to report to Suite 212 to check in, which we did. Check-in was swift and friendly. We had two suites reserved, and they were good about trying to put both suites on the same floor.
The rooms were spacious and clean. The beds were extremely comfortable. All the suites are studio suites with a small eat-in kitchen right by the entry, but it was spacious enough for anything we were likely to do with it. The suite sleep 4 -- there's a king-sized bed and a sleeper sofa, so a family would do well here.
Was there a timeshare pitch? Well, yes and no. After we checked in, the concierge invited us down to get a discount book for restaurants and attractions near Shell resorts throughout the islands. While there, he offered to book our activities, if we needed help. (We didn't; we had already booked our activities before we arrived.) He also asked if we were interested in hearing a Shell Vacation Club pitch the next day. We declined, as we're already timeshared out, and our time in Honolulu was very limited. But he was cool with that, and we didn't get any high-pressure tactics from him or anyone else we met.
If you have read reviews of the Waikiki Marina Resort at the Ilikai on the Web, you may have read about problems with the elevators, long waits, construction noise, etc., etc. We didn't have any problem whatsoever getting an elevator the whole time we were there. And, while there in construction going on next door at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, it was neither intrusive nor excessive.
What is interesting is that the Ilikai Hotel itself is really owned by several entities. Shell has ownership of part of it. Another part is an apartment/condo complex. The remaining part is the hotel. The Shell people say that they often get nailed with bad Internet reviews from people who have stayed in another segment of the Ilikai. That's too bad because the Shell staff certainly made our stay absolutely wonderful. We will probably try to go back there one of these years.
