  • Mountain Run at Boyne

I am new to Bluegreen and just booked some bonus time at Boyne. I live in Michigan, but have never been to the Boyne area. I know that I have read that the facilities at the Boyne Mountain resort are there for Bluegreen owners to use. Do they ever give you any hassle about that?

Also, given the limited time we will be there (2 days) what would be some suggestions either to do around the resort or for quick day trips?

We are not going until the end of October, but I am so excited I want to go NOW! ha-ha.

    Have a great day,
    Julie

    Mountain Run @ Boyne

I live in Petoskey about 20 minutes from Mountain Run. I would encourage you to join the Yahoo Group for Bluegreen owners/persons of interest. Then search the archives for some of my posts regarding Boyne and I have listed many things to do in the area. While your time would be limited while here, I would love to meet you!

Susan and jules, We are going to be there October 20th-October 26th! This will be our 3rd time to Mountain Run at Boyne. Prior to arriving at Boyne Falls, we will be trying our hand at steelhead fishing on The Manistee.

jules, one of our favorite places to eat is at The Boyne River Inn(BRI) over in Boyne City for their Friday night fish fry.

Susan, two years ago we got some wonderful smoked salmon at a market in Charlevoix. Is there a good fish market in the Boyne Falls, Petoskey area?

        Julie,

They have a newer section of the Grand Mountain Lodge, and an older section. When we were there, we were told to use the older sections pool and other stuff. It may be different now as we were there during the middle of summer. Our kids loved the waterpark, but that was more money as well, and not included. One of the cool things we did was to take a ride up the ski slope to the restaurant on top of one of the ski hills and had a nice drink or two, while overlooking the resort / area and watched the sun come down. I have NOT checked out the yahoo group (didn't know it or this forum board existed until today) so if this is repeating things, sorry. We didn't really find any great places to eat, but we did enjoy the little restaurant on the beach at deer lake. We only had a sandwich, but it was nice soaking in the sun at the beach having a snack. Hope some of that helps....have fun.

You can fish steelhead and salmon right in Petoskey! At the Bear River just off the bay or in the bay (Little Traverse Bay--part of Lake Michigan).

Look up my posts on the Yahoo group about things to do in the area.....there are tons of things to do even in the off season................one thing I never mentioned before is Raven Hill Discovery Center for those of you with children and the adults with child like hearts! and this is closer to Mtn. Run than Petoskey is!

Not sure about fish market in Petoskey; by the way, Boyne Falls is a if you blink, you miss it kind of place, although Betty's Restaurant is very good.

I'll look into a fish market in Petoskey............though nearly all the grocery stores offer fresh catch as well as the meat markets and terrific restaurants with fantastic whitefish. And Charlevoix isn't much further than Petoskey from Mtn. Run anyway!

WE live in Michigana nd go to Boyne several times a year - it is WONDERFUL!

Spend some time in Boyne City, esp. at the park/marina - you can feed the ducks, watch the waves roll in, and just admire Lake Charlevoix. At the corner of main and lake street is Kilwins chocolates which has great candy for much cheaper per lb prices than the one in TRaverse City.... a little farther down lake street (south I think) is Indo China Gardens which ahs some fo the best chinese food we have ever had - its not fancy, but its good! The lunch buffet is esp. good. Across the street and a little farther down (south again I think) Lake street is a brand new restaurant (called ___ lake street I think) and it is fantastically decorated and has great bar food. If you drive until lake street dead ends (south) and follow the signs to avalanche park, there are a lot of steps that take you to the top of a big hill where you can overlook Boyne City and Lake Charlevoix - it is AMAZING!!!

From the bluegreen resort, if you go south on 131, pretty soon you'll see brown signs for "Dead Mans Hill" - it has a great overlook of the area and wonderful nature trails - its hardly ever visited and our family loves it!

Lastly, although the pools you can use at the ski resort are old-ish, the hot tub behind the clock tower is one of our all time favorite hangouts!!!

If you continue going south on US131, and take the next road to the right (west), there will be another scenic lookout identified on the right hand side (north) of the road, while Dead Man's Hill is SO very awesome, this one is totally breathtaking and absolutely no one is ever there! Fall colors are usually pretty good through the second week of October and maybe even later....................if you see great color in the Gaylord area when you come up, ours won't be so vivid yet.

Taking M75 from Boyne City to Walloon Lake, just after the first big curve to the right, look out to the forest to your left and left ahead and you will see magificent colors.........also Hog's Back Hill is MOST breathtaking when dressed in fall color, but it is pretty difficult to tell you how to get there.....just outside (southeast) of East Jordan on a road off of M66 that actually doesn't T at M66 but rather is at an angle where it comes into M66......this is right across the airport field on M66 (which will be on the north side of the road, as you are approaching this other road).........at the very least, you will see some great colors.

If you are antique hunters, there are lots of antique shops.................

Don't bother taking time for Mackinac Island since your time will be short............but if you DO get to Mackinaw City, be sure to go to Alice's Kandy & Korn....the most AWESOME carmel corn there is anywhere.......ask for the bucket refilll, even if you don't have a bucket from there--they don't care and it is the best deal you can get..........or you can get Mackinaw Mix......cheese popcorn and carmel corn.......I haven't tried it but other customers there on Labor Day told me it was the BEST!

(The carmel and butterscotch chews are to die for as are the pecan pralines!!)

The hot tub referred to above is a 40 person outdoor hot tub!!!! And the outdoor pool in the approximate same location is heated year round. The BG outdoor pool is NOT heated and therefore is closed in the winter.......there is a small indoor hot tub in the registration building.

Not sure I put in this thread to be sure to go to Raven Hill Discovery Center:

2008-09_Winter Hours: Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, Raven Hill is open weekends from 12 to 4 pm on Saturdays and 2 to 4 pm on Sundays or any time by appointment. Treat yourself and your family to a day or an afternoon of fun and exploration at Raven Hill Discovery Center. You can build connections between science, history and the arts in an interactive learning environment. In addition to playing in the hands-on museum and holding the exotic animals, you can also spend time in the one-room schoolhouse, see the geologic history of the earth in the Exploring Beyond Jurassic Park outdoor exhibit, stroll through various cultures in the Ancient World, explore the new Tree House and take a peek at the Center’s “in-progress” exhibit, the Energy House, which is solar powered. Plan at least 2 hours or more, if you are taking a class or experiencing any of the outdoor exhibits.

                Thanks for the info

Thanks so much for the information, it will be helpful when we get there. I am so excited to "try out" my first Bluegreen vacation. Any idea if there might be bonus time availability at Mt. Run over Thanksgiving? I am a teacher and usually have to travel when everyone else does.

I would seriously doubt it but one just never knows; cancellations happen, especially--just outside of the 10 day lose your points if you cancel period of time.

I can't believe how busy they are going to be in the fall....must be Michigan people are staying closer to home because of the fuel prices.

Anyone near the east coast of Texas and "Ike"?

Susan and others...how is the food at Latitude in Bay Harbor? There is a restaurant.com certificate for it and today is the last day for 80% off.

Sorry, I just got home. Latitude is rather good but very pricey. 80% off would be terrific.........................I wasn't really crazy about the place but it's one of those you're glad you went there but probably not again, but that was mainly because of the prices although I seem to remember the menu didn't have an extreme amount of choices on it.

I am new to this forum, but not bluegreen. This is my first post here. Our first visit to Mountain Run was for a weekend and most of the stuff to do is either at Boyne (the waterpark this time of year) or in nearby Boyne City. Boyne Falls isn't We ended up going to Petosky (a great place to dine) on Saturday. We live just 2 hours south of there and often "use up" points with weekends, gifts to the kids, etc. Great place to hang out. The grills suck. They really need to get new grills and/or new brushes. The pool is very warm in early spring (like May/June) but cold from then on. And how many times can you deal with "Marco" "Polo"? The hot tub is dirty and foamy. But, hey, it's Bluegreen, right The slushies are nice.

Yup, that's me................it's for one of our free white weeks; I was down there again this morning but we only stayed overnight on Monday night........How long are you there for? I would love to get together with you.......I'll PM you with my contact #s..................I can come down to Boyne Falls or you can come to Petoskey or whatever..............our unit is 1921....it is disgusting that they are use one of the lower one bedroom units in that building for storage of maintenance supplies (inside and out of it), tying up a unit that could be reserved AND it looks awful.

The attached unit but other entrance, they are doing remodeling; painting; fixing up in that one.

Yes, we did an owner update...........I posted that on the yahoo group and I'll put a separate post but in this thread, next.
