We live near there and go all the time. Besides beach there is Moody Gardens which includes a very nice Aquarium, a Pyramid Rain Forest, Space center area and an IMAX Theater. If you have kids there is the Schlitterbaun Waterpark. Downtown Galveston called The Strand was a nice area to spend time going in the shops but many of them are still closed from Hurricane Ike. We saw about a dozen places opened when we were there few weeks ago. There are several museums and old homes to tour.

In my experience, few people who have done beach vacations elsewhere care for Galveston.

I don't agree with JLB's blanket statement as it only is in reference to the beaches found here.

We have been to many wonderful beach vacations (mostly in Hawaii but also in the Caribbean) and there is no comparison to Galveston. But I still enjoy visiting Galveston when ever we go. It is a town with a very interesting history and some nice attractions. Don't go expecting white sands or blue water. But do some research on the history of this island (read Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson) and you will have a better appreciation of what this town has to offer.

I agree with both of you. I wouldn't go there for the beach but would go for the history, attractions and seafood. I probably wouldn't go at all until more of the Strand has reopened. That said, the Silverleaf property & Islander East are at least on the beach side of the road. AFIK, everything else is across the street from the seawall, and there hasn't been much beach to speak of for decades. Just MHO.

My statement was not a blanket statement; it was prefaced by in my experience.

It is still accurate, having added just one, maybe one and a half, on the favorable side.

& and we have considerable family in the Houston area, who, although they have (or had before the blow) a condo on the beach there, would prefer to go elsewhere, and do.

&, I was being diplomatic, as many consider Galveston to be dump, but I didn't wanna upset anyone.

I can say, also from personal experience, that Inverness by the Sea is what I normally call a lesser resort, and it is one of the lesser lesser resorts we have stayed at.

Yep, been there done that! It was a lesser of the lesser resorts when we stayed there in 2003. That said, at least before Ike, the area out by the State Park had a pretty nice beach. I'd stay there in a pinch, but if I'm going to a Texas beach, my preference will always be Mustang or Padre Island.

Inverness got hit pretty hard by IKE so most of it if not all should be all new now. As for beach it is right across from the Rocks.

We stayed at Mustang Island one time and I didn't think the beach was any nicer than Galveston as for the water and sand. South Padre we liked but the Texas beaches don't compare to Florida Gulf side Beaches.

We are off to Panama City Beach this Friday....yeah!!

We usually stay at Silverleaf's Seaside Resort since we are Silverleaf owners. And we have day use at all Silverleaf Resorts so it makes a good day trip since we are close.

Silverleaf's Seaside Resort is across the street from the beach. They own the beach across the street and also have mini golf.

I know this post is old, but I new here, so, all of these posts are new to me!

Anyway, my wife and I are from Lake Charles, La and we travel to Galveston on the bike often. Do you find the Seaside resort crowded, and how are the facilities?

                            Thanks.

                              Welcome to Timeshare Forums

We were there a month ago and it was pretty full. They only have one pool which is the main complaint by most owners. They have been promissing another pool for some time now. They tend to draw many non-owners to do t/s tours which makes it more crowded and now kids are out of school. This is mostly on weekends. The units and the grounds are very nice. We have stayed in both the Lodge Units and the Presidental Units. Across the street is the beach. They redid the parking area and made more space, rebuilt the walkway over the dunes since IKE, added a picnic table and grill. I wished they had put some type of cover pavillion would have been nice but they do have one at the resort with tables and grills.

I noticed you joined our SL/Yahoo Group are you a Silverleaf owner?
