  • Wi Fi Hotspots at Big Cedar Wild. Club?

I read someone's blog that they found several wi-fi hotspots at Big Cedar Wilderness Club. Does anyone know where they are located? Thanks for any info you have. I appreciate it.

I think there are several places on the Big Cedar (rental) side

I believe I read somewhere that it is available the registration building lobby on the Big Cedar (not Wilderness Club) side and the Falls Lodge lobby (also Big Cedar). I have not used them personally so I'm not 100%, but I've read that other people have used wireless in those locations.

Also, re: your other thread about getting 2 studios instead of a 2 bedroom -- I just double checked for you on the online registration and they still aren't showing any 2 bedrooms or 1 bedrooms available. If I were you, I would ask at checkin just in case. You'll do fine in 2 studios but the extra space you get with a 2 bedroom would be very comfortable.

I started a great response, and then the computer crashed again. I'll see if I can remember some of what I was getting at. This is just my best guess because I really don't know the answer of why it is difficult to get it set up and when it is, why the charge. But I made my guess and here is what I think:

Motels are very compact in their design, little sprawl to them so little equipement is required to cover the area.

Now resorts typically are larger, maybe covering more real estate. More equipement is required, more routers, I would guess amplifiers to keep the signal strong enough to keep up the speed. Lot of cable needs to be run to provide the coverage. There are potentially more users which requires more bandwidth coming at a higher cost. This equipement and bandwidth is probably a lot more money than a motel would pay for setting up their site for wi-fi. I expect that the resorts are charging the user fee to help offset some of that costs.

            That is my best guess.

Here is my take. The hotel/motel has to compete with the motel/hotel down the street. Business people need wi-fi. Therefore to compete, once one has it free they all have to. So, you pay for your "free" wi-fi as a non-line item in your room charge. Most vacation people do not "need" wi-fi. So, wi-fi users will have to pay for wi-fi until we get to the point that timeshare sellers use "free" wi-fi as a sales tactic or people won't trade into resorts unless there is "free" wi-fi. Also, by having outside people do the wi-fi business, the resort doesn't have to buy the equipment (which soon will be obsolete) and hire the tech people to maintain it (and answer all the calls from people staying at the resort who aren't tech savvy).

Because that's the way it is.

In the hotel/motel/hospitality industry there is a level at which stuff is no longer free. You know, like continental breakfast and stuff like that.

Sorta like why golf balls are more expensive at the Pro Shop than at Wal Mart.

We have pricelined a few hundred times and with them it is at 3-Star quality.

As to the original request, for hot spots, if you will google something line hot spot locator you can find a site that gives you hot spots for a given area.

I have seen it for Banson.

Last January was the first time we took a laptop along on our annual Florida trip, and it is interesting where you can find hot spots.

Thanks to all for the Info

Thanks for all the info. I did find the wi-fi in each of the places you mentioned. At the Big Cedar Registration, in the hallway that leads to the Gifthouse, in an old-fashioned telephone-booth type feel were a computer as well as LAN wire to connect with. Was only online for 30 minutes or less due to so much activity.

Those of you who replied to myself and others really make some great points. BCWC staff even said that most people want to avoid work distractions or it won't be a vacation! Anyway, I used it for good and not for evil (coursework only) and managed to live unplugged most of the trip.
