  • Paris Royal Regency - recent review?

Has anyone here (especially US-based members) been to this resort / apartment? I have read a couple of reviews on the internet (redweek, etc) and most reviews have been over 3-4 years old. But, the reviews have ranged from "a dump" to "decent". I have seen references to "dried urine in the bathroom" to "staff goes out of their way to help you".

So, what is the latest on this "resort' ? Is it being brought up to DRI quality?

Just a little background, DW and I are spoiled by our recent Paris trip (just the two of us) and am now considering going back, this time maybe taking our two young kids.

Went there last Nov over US Thanksgiving weekend. We liked it: it's not the Pennisula or the Four Seasons, but it's also far from the worst Eurpoean timeshare we've stayed at.

    The pros:

    * easy food shopping. At least two markets within a 5 minute walk and we ran over to the closest bakery every morning for fresh breakfast pastries which were oh-so-good and oh-so-cheap!

    * comfortable, clean unit. We had a studio and we were on the first floor. The kitchen was VERY usable (we cooked dinner almost every night), the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was plenty spacious for us. Then again, we aren't too demanding on bathrooms: as long as they're clean, the water pressure is decent, the water stays hot, and my 6'3" husband doesn't crack his skull while showering, we're pretty happy.

    * public transportation. It typically took us about 15 minutes to stroll over to the Metro station. The 1 line is incredibly clean and nice: I tend to think of it as the "tourist line." It's a straight shot to most of the famous tourist attractions: the Louvre, the Marais, the Bastille, the Arc de Triomphe, the Tuilleries Gardens. It was actually a little disappointing when we switched to the 12 line to visit Sacre Coeur: it's just not as well maintained as the 1 line.

    * lovely staff. I speak the smallest smattering of French and my husband is hopeless at foreign languages so usually I play "translator" in France, but even he was made perfectly at ease by the staff.

    the cons:

    * not much of a night life: we were visiting Paris on the cheap, so we made our gourmet meals lunches and ate in for dinner. There isn't much going on around the resort late at night after dinner though: we just hung out and went to bed early so that we could enjoy those yummy breakfast pastries in the early morning! Our last night in Paris, we stayed in the city and it was just lovely to walk along the Seine at 11 p.m. after dinner.

    * no wi-fi in the rooms. There's a computer in the lobby, which was handy for checking email in the morning before we explored the city, but I was mildly disappointed that there wasn't wi-fi in the rooms. In this day and age, it's just not that hard to provide! We ended up using wi-fi hotspots & our iPhones (but no cellular usage: that gets expensive FAST!) to keep up with things at home.

    * construction. They did warn us that they're doing some work to the exterior before we made the reservation, but there was scaffolding right outside our patio door, which prevented any sunlight from coming into the room. We weren't disturbed by any noise though.

In the end, since we're Diamond owners and THEClub members, I see us using this resort as regularly as possible, despite these cons. Vincennes was really lovely to stroll through, the farmers' market on Saturday was great fun, and it's reasonably convenient to the city center. But if I had easy access to another resort in the city center, I'd probably choose to be there at least half the time. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of access to this resort: I looked for availability as a lark and found plenty for my target dates.
