  • Timeshare Newbie, Honeymoon help requested!

    Hello!

This may be long, so i'll try to do a TLDR at the bottom!

My Fiance and myself are working on planning our honeymoon. We were looking into either St Lucia and Barbados in the Caribbean or something in Hawaii. My father just told us we are able to use his DRI timeshare for our honeymoon!

The only problem is, he doesn't know anything about it and has just converted! He has owned a Polo Towers week 13 two bedroom for many years, and had recently brought it over into the DRI 'The Club'.

    His 'Contracts Summary' shows:
'Polo Towers Suites, Week 13, 2 bedroom lock-off, red season, 15,000 points, active'
'Diamond Resorts U.S. Collection, 3,000 points, Active'

At the top right of the page (Account Snapshot), it only shows 2011 and 2012 points at 3,000 each.

He received a certificate in the mail for his 3000 points, but did not receive one for his polo towers points. When he called up, and talked to someone, they said he owed a $100 transfer fee, which according to the sales rep whom set him up with his DRI plan, said that they would cover.

Since he hasn't gotten all of his points into his plan yet, is it possible for them to waive the 'Save Period' for points and move all his current points into next year (So we can use them for our honeymoon!). If he has to follow the current timetable, he would only be able to transfer over 25% of his points, and he doesn't even have his 15k points from his polo towers timeshare in with the rest of his points.

Is there something special he needs to do to save/convert his polo towers points each year into 'DRI' points, or 'US Collection' points or something? How do all the points work with Interval International?.

    ----------------------------------------

Ok... onto the 'important' part of this post, our honeymoon!

We are looking to either go to the Caribbean or Hawaii, and we were wondering what resorts are available. We went into the 'book online' portion of the page, and are looking though some of the resorts listed there. They have very limited locations in the Caribbean, and none in St Lucia or Barbados. Are there resorts in those locations available through II?

My Fiance has been looking at reviews for some of the resorts listed, and the majority of them have been negative, everything from dirty carpets, kids getting ringworm from the rooms, uncaring desk clerks and poor service. Outside of things that may or may not be opinion, most of the resorts were significantly far from the beach, some over a mile away, parking was an additional fee, etc...

She is worried that if we go with something though the time share, it will only be a 'vacation' and not a 'honeymoon'!

Does anyone have any honeymoon experience using DRI, or if any of the sites have rooms/options/upgrades for a honeymoon suite? We are getting married on august 4th, and are looking at the two weeks following the wedding for our honeymoon.

If we cannot find a suitable resort to directly use the timeshare points on, we were thinking about using them for Airline miles/round trip flights. What is the conversion rate/value of points-> miles for this? Is it worth it?

    -------------

    As promised.. TLDR;
-1- My dad said we could use his timeshare, but he just switched to DRI and has no clue about it yet! (details above).

-2- Is there anything special for moving polo towers 'points' into your account per season?

-3- since he's new to DRI, can he get around the current 'Save Period' for points to move all his points into next year?

-4- My Fiance has found most reviews for the resorts listed under DRI to be unfavorable, What is your expediences with Caribbean/Hawaiian resorts though DRI? II?

-5- Is it worth using the points for Air Travel if we cannot find a suitable resort?

    Thanks for your help

If the DRI destinations are unfavourable then look at II.

You'll find that you can place a pending request which will give you much more choice. Of the areas you have mentioned it is very difficult to find the right availability at the right time. I might even suggest getting a getaway with interval priced up for St. Lucia if you want any kind of guarentee as to be honest, people rarely bank their weeks with II, the resort to go for is Windjammer from my understanding.

Points for air travel won't get you the same value as a stay in a resort.

Try and get a request in, do it as early as possible, most deposits happen at this time of the year so get to it.
I am happy to try and provide help and advice on II and can offer personal assistance by PM if needed.

If you looking for a Honeymoon Suite Hotel Type of trip

Using your dad's DRI points may not be what you want.

There is one DRI Hawaiian resort on Maui that with 15K I think you can get two weeks of Ocean View 1 bedroom suite.
The Kaanapali Beach Club used to be the Embassy Maui Hotel, so it has nice hotel suites with a microwave, nice deluxe bath.

There are lots of great places to eat, see, swim, play on Maui, and it would be a great destination for a Honeymoon.

I don't have any answers about your DRI issues, we don't own any of their points.

You and your Dad need to read the rules at DRI in the Annual Member Benefits Directory.

If you've actually converted to THE Club, you should be issued your points each year automatically.

The Rules are the Rules the only way you have a chance at doing what you're proposing with current year points is to plead to
Patrick Duffy (Patrick.Duffy@diamondresorts.com) Chief Experience Officer
        and/or
        Jeff Shelton (jeff.shelton@diamondresorts.com) Executive Resolutions

There are only two DRI resorts in Hawaii
Kaanapali Beach Club and The Point at Poipu
        stayed at both, great
Most others are from the old Sunterra Pacific [before and after known as Vacation Internationale] I've stayed at most of them, fine, it's all in your expectations and if you suffer when you subject yourself to sales experiences.

Using points for any other 'exchange' other than in THE Club is a costly move, the management turns a buck on every different transaction.

You and your Dad need to read every thread in this forum.

          Correction/clarification, Spence.

For Polo Towers Suites (towers 1 and 2) where deeds are for fixed weeks, an owner needs to let DRI know each year that he wants to deposit/give up his unit to DRI in exchange for CLUB points. IF the owner does not contact DRI, DRI will automatically make a reservation at the Polo Towers for the owner according to the fixed week he owns. When this reservation is made, the owner will see the points deducted from his DRI CLUB account. IIRC this automatic resrvation happens approximately 10-12 months in advance. No biggie because once the reservation is made, the owner can simply call DRI to cancel the reservation, and the points will go back to his CLUB account for use.

For the Polo Tower Villas (tower 3), this conversion of points happens automatically so no need to contact DRI.
