  • totally confused..

last summer my husband and i purchased a membership with sunterra (Club Sunterra Vacations I - UDI - 4000pts). our salesman - manny at one of the florida locations - told us that our family (which at the time included myself, my husband, our 2 children and his parents) would be able to vacation with each other every year..or we would be able to vacation w/ our immediate family (privately) and his parents would be able to vacation with the remainder of the points. we were also told that if we wanted to purchase a weeks vacation outside of club points, we could do so at $179/wk. if we did this, we could turn around and sell that week for far more to someone else who didn't have a timeshare. and then he told us that we could travel anywhere, all over the world (i still have his chicken scratch on the brochure).

is any of this true??? i looked at the PDF online w/ the rates/points/weeks/whatever.. and it appears that most of the time, you can only get a 1br or studio w/ 4000 points! i can't find anything about purchasing these extra weeks.. and i read on these forums that w/ the CSV-I membership you can only go to 19 locations - which is NOT what we were promised!

i appreciate any answers or help you guys can give us. thanks!

When you bought from Sunterra you bought CSV trust points and Sunterra gave you a membership in Club Sunterra. With the Club Sunterra membership you can use your points (Sunoptions) at any of the ~100 sunterra resorts. BUT when you sell ( for much less than you paid) you will only be able to sell the CSV Trust point and not the Club Sunterra membership. So anyone buying your points will only be able to use them at the 19 CSV trust resorts and not at the ~100 resorts which you can use. Also if you buy more points from anyone other than sunterra, those points will not be able to use the club resorts, only the resort(s) listed on the deed.

    But to answer your questions.
4000 pts isn't alot of points. Generally it is enough for a 1 bd (sleeps 4) during mid - low seasons.

Yes, you can "rent" extra weeks but unless you want to go off season it will cost more than $179 (maybe alot more).

You will be able to use your points to travel to any of the many Sunterra resorts around the world but only if you have enough points.

PS Most people will need alot more than 4000 pts to vacation with a large family since you'll need at least a 2 bedroom unit. There are some 2 bd units which you can get for 4000 pts but most cost much more than that.

If you want more points, BUY RESALE and pay pennies on the dollar. But to use those points at all of the club resorts you'll have to get them into the club. Which means buying more from sunterra and insisting that Sunterra bring the resale points into the club as a condition of you buying more. OR you could buy CSV trust points resale and just use them at the 19 trusts resorts.

4000 SunOptions/points is not a lot of points, you have correctly surmized that you won't be able to get too many vacations out of that each year unless you are able to travel at the last minute and find 'Quick Getaways' which are half price points 60days ahead for full weeks and 30days ahead for partial weeks/2night minimum. These Quick Getaways are most often available in the off-season not Prime or Holiday time.

If you bought from the developer/Sunterra then in addition to membership in Club Sunterra Vacations 1 - CSV1 you were given membership in Club Sunterra with access to the ~100 resorts. As Bill says, if you had bought resale from another owner or broker, you normally do not get the benefits of Club Sunterra without ponying up extra money paid to Sunterra to re-renter that ownership in the Club.

Club Sunterra offers 'Bonus Time' for cash at 30days or less ahead, it's no where near the price you quoted (normally $50-$100/night) and if you're referring to 'Getaways' from the Exchange Company - Interval International there weeks for cash or more in the range of $399 and again are not normally prime weeks.

So, getting weeks for $179 and 'selling' them for big bucks was all a bald faced lie.
