  • Friends buying Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort from developer

Our friends just attended a tour and am buying LTVR and am set on buying directly from the developer. Due to severe time cruch, they were not able to do all the paperwork on site, and the paperwork is on the way.

I know for the Marriott system, the only thing one loses buying resale is the ability to turn in his unit for Marriott Reward Pts each year.

How about with DRI ? How would my friends lose if buying resale?

I have not gotten the skinny on the presentation, but they were pressured enough to buy a 'travel/escape package' worth about 6500 Club pts to use within next 18 months. Frankly, my friends cannot remember much - apparently it was ALOT of numbers and good feelings (you know, how good you feel at the presentations if its your first time!).

I attended that presentation last March, it is VERY high pressure, and they make it sound like resales won't have the ability to trade points in the club

Check out Spence's stickies re conversion info for the truth on that note. Some of his other stickies should be helpful, too.

Don't know what product they're selling at LTVR either DRI US Collection or maybe the 'new' California Trust. Buying retail, it really makes little difference except for whatever home resort priority you get.

As a resale buyer, what would they be buying? A floating deeded week at LTVR or the DRI US Collection Trust? Buying the deed you don't have the points/Club, buying the DRI US Collection you get points in the Trust but nowhere else, don't know that there were ever any UDI deeds/points sold there. Then you can 'convert' as discussed in the conversion thread to get into THE Club, what you may not get here is the Club Select - the ability to convert non Club properties on an annual basis, it can sometimes be negotiated if you know to ask for it.

OK, thanks. I got the info I need now to probe them a little more over the next few days to see if I can figure out the specifics of what they were offered. At least for starters, first thing tomorrow AM, I will tell them to hold off on the paper work. They are dead tired from a fun filled day in the snow followed by a long drive home. A 2hr high pressure sale did not help, either.

Glitter, what was the offer you received? My friends received several offers (which is why their heads are spinning), but what stuck was the lowest - they think it is 6500 annual pts for $22k.

The big thing to tell them is "yes, buying from DRI can be a good idea" but only after they have bought some cheap resale weeks. Then, when they spend the big bucks, they will get not only the developer week but also the cheap resale week all in the club.

Tell them if there is any chance at all that they might want more than one week that they would be completely crazy to buy from the developer first.

          The way it works:
          - Buy first week from DRI and second week resale, you have one week in the club and one week not in the club
          - Buy first week from resale and second week from DRI, you have two weeks in the club.
